Vision in Red
And on the metal of the key, there was a new mark.
A scorch mark. In the shape of a fingerprint.
Amal looked at the window. The sun was rising over the camp, casting long shadows across the floor.
But the fear was gone. Replaced by something else. Something colder. Something sharper.
She knew what they were fighting now. It wasn't just soldiers. It wasn't just ghosts.
It was the Land itself, driven mad by what had been done to it.
"Ibrahim," she whispered to the empty room. "I know where you are."
She got out of bed. She walked to the window and threw it open.
The morning air rushed in, smelling of diesel and fresh bread. The Zenana was still buzzing, but it sounded weak now. Distant.
"Good morning," she said to the drone.
She went to the closet and pulled out her travel bag.
She packed her notebooks. She packed her laptop. She packed the key.
Then she went to the kitchen and made coffee. Strong, black coffee.
When Fadi walked in, bleary-eyed and confused, she was already dressed in her best blazer.
"Amal?" he asked. "What are you doing? It's Friday."
"I have work to do," she said.
"What work?"
"I'm going to Jerusalem," she said. "I'm going to find my grandfather."
"Amal, you can't just go," Fadi said, rubbing his eyes. "You need a permit. You need..."
"I have the key," she said.
She put down her cup.
"And I have the noise."
She kissed him on the cheek—a hard, fierce kiss. Then she kissed a sleeping Noor.
Then she walked out the door, into the labyrinth, ready to burn it down.
