Chapter 36

Circling around to the back, Gordon and Donna returned to the kitchen, where the rest of the team still sat, studying the video footage. They appeared visibly uncomfortable as Fraser looked up with a suspicious glance. With obvious concern, Tom inquired about the tension Gordon had been experiencing. “Yeah,” Gordon replied. “I think I'm doing better now.” Walking around the kitchen the kitchen table, Gordon and Donna stood behind the rest of the team, as all eyes fixed themselves on the laptop's display.

“Jesus,” Steve said. “Gordon, this is amazing. It's like you're a ghost magnet.”

“Yeah, I know,” Tom said. “Our investigations are gonna take a whole different direction.” Everyone was excited, except Fraser, who sat with his forehead resting against the palms of his hands. Seeing Gordon leave with Donna sent him into a silent rage. It was within the past few months he had pursued her. At first, it was a harmless request for dinner. But Donna, seeing a strange expression on his face, refused his advance. Out of revenge, he began calling her frequently, and making unannounced visits, where he sat in his car, across the street – watching. She knew that talking to him would not work, but it was when he approached her in public that she had had enough. He offered a transparent apology for his conduct, and wanted to make it up to her with dinner.

Donna was unable to contain her laughter when Fraser grabbed her by the shoulder. Since the beginning, she had seen him as unstable, and expecting an act of violence, Donna was quick to react. Grabbing his hand, she brought it down near her waist, firmly grasped his ring, and broke it at the knuckle. Until that day, she had underestimated her physical strength, but that day, when she needed to defend herself, she did so very effectively.

Screaming in pain, Fraser tore his hand away from Donna's grip, and as he cradled it in his other hand, Donna noticed thin streams of blood running towards his hand. She was never bothered by the sight of blood, but she realized that the force she had applied to Fraser's finger caused the flesh near his palm to tear, dislocating the knuckle, and pushing the bone out through the open wound. Donna was shocked by his injury, and while she didn't apologize for her actions, expressed concern, and offered to call an ambulance for him. Fraser's anger began to fume as a wild look spread across his face. Without a word, he turned and stormed back to his car. He spent the next few weeks with his hand and finger bound in a splint. The visits and harassing phone calls came to a stop, and Donna reclaimed her life. A few weeks later, she discovered Tom's paranormal team, and having nothing else to do, became a member. However, attending her first meeting, she discovered that Fraser had also joined, but refused to run away from what had quickly become a tense situation, Donna decided that, once again, she needed to be strong, and remained with the team, in spite of Fraser's presence. The only person she was trying to prove anything to was herself, that she could tough out any situation, no matter how threatening. She would, however, take active precautions to stay clear of Fraser during their investigations, and began carrying a taser, disguised as a cell phone. As a further means of preparedness, Donna familiarized herself with the human anatomy, and chose several soft areas of attack, should the need to defend herself, again, arise. She also knew of one particular place that was especially vulnerable, a place where her taser could do the most damage.
