Chapter 55
The overwhelming panic of being confronted by the befouled phantasm continued to linger over the group as Maya pressed down on the gas. Driving faster than she should have raised concerns with Eli and Aurora, but neither wanted to speak up given the stress she was experiencing. It seemed to emanate from her as waves on a stormy sea and could be felt by both Eli and Aurora, prompting them to avoid any conversation. Stopping short of the maintenance building, they soon arrived at the McKenzie Conservation Area, and seeing how isolated it was left them feeling a bit safer as Maya carefully moved the RV into a large space surrounded by Pine trees and snow-covered ground. With the lake nearly a quarter of a mile away, one might call it idyllic -- maybe even pastoral. But despite getting the rest they so badly needed, the next few days would be less than comforting, with fear continuing to stand watch as a sentinel of things to come.
