Depression quickly took Ryan in its painful grip, and he spent days locked away in his apartment, convinced that his life no longer held purpose. Even his apartment seemed empty. Until now, its only use was as a place to study and learn. Now, it was simply a space surrounded by walls, baron of the sanctuary of knowledge it was only days before. He wanted to continue learning and concluded that if he could prove himself to be knowledgeable enough, skilled enough, UNE would admit him back into the program. But there was still the question of what he would say to his mother. Perhaps he could tell her that the pressure of the program was more overwhelming than he thought. He just needed a break, some time alone to mentally regroup. All he needed to do now was find someplace else to live. The campus was two blocks from his apartment. Now, it stood merely as a memorial to a very questionable future, and Ryan wanted to get as far from it as possible.
