Kieran

Kieran was still in the cell, while outside, ‘officialdom’ worked its slow progress. He was still in a state of lethargy, or kind of shock, as Brett hadn’t truly sank in, or what happened the previous night, all of which roiled in his mind. At present what was at the forefront was the fact he ran away, just escaped. Didn’t stop and help his parents.

Guilt was another negative creeping factor in his mind.

He was sat on the bed, knees up, staring at the wall but not seeing it.

They had taken his phone.

After around another hour of staring, of overthinking, he heard the door being opened.

An officer stood there looking at him, waiting to be noticed.

“Your parents have been found murdered in your house, and it’s understandable why you were detained. You are suspected of murder. However we can’t hold you any longer as your time is up. There is no evidence that you did it yet, so you have been bailed pending further enquiries. You’re free to go”.

Kieran just looked at him.

“They’re out there, and they’re after me. I want to stay here. It’s the safest place”.

“I’m sorry but we cannot keep you here unless you are charged. You need to leave. I can give you information though regarding psychiatrists and mental health practitioners. Collect your things at the desk,” he said, then left.

Kieran stared at the open door.

Red fucking tape, he thought. My hands may have been dripping with my parent’s blood, but because of a ‘technicality’, I could be scott-free.

He slowly left, and felt fear when he stepped out. He had never felt like this before. Afraid of being outside. Of the children that may suddenly appear and run at him with weapons.

He decided he would ring Bean-head, who answered after several rings.

Kieran told him everything.

“I believe you. It’s been absolute pandemonium round here. Sirens, police, the lot. I wouldn’t come back”.

“Those kids, any news about the kids?”.

“Too be honest I’ve heard nothing. I think the police are confused really. I don’t think they’re looking for anyone, except you. But you’re in custody aren’t you?

So they’ll probably take ages in the house, even though they may have who did it according to them. Have you got yourself a solicitor?”

“No they let me go because of lack of evidence”.

“Evidence, even this early. They usually keep suspects in jail until they’re done investigating…don’t they?”.

“I need to be around in case they need me, but I’m out because my time in custody was up and I wasn’t charged with anything, so they had to let me go”.

“Good old-fashioned bureaucracy,” said Bean-head. “I’ll bet if you were even accused of stealing money from some big-knob suits, your ass would be in prison no question. But accused of murder, ahh go on fella, don’t do that again, now run along”.

“Yes, I think you’re probably right, but where’s Herbie? Did he print out those sheets?”

“Herbie’s off playing detective. He tried to call you but couldn’t get through. He called me to say he’s on the trail of those kids”.

“He’s what! Tell him to stop, those kids are fucking murderers. Tell you what, I’ll get off the phone and call him”.

“Okay, be careful,” said Bean-head.

“I need to be, because I think those kids will come after me”. He hung up.

Which means…he thought, looking back at the police-station.

This really is the safest place.

He called Herbie, who answered quickly.

“Kieran hi, guess what? I’m on the trail of those kids”.

“Herbie, you need to stop. They are fucking dangerous. They’re murderers.

They killed my parents and tried to kill me but I got out. If they see you they will kill you. Please Herbie, for your own safety, stop”.

Herbie was quiet for a few moments.

“Sorry to hear that,” he said. “I heard lots of sirens last night. But anyway, they’re walking along a path, away from the town. They’re heading into the countryside. But I’m too far behind for them to see”.

“Herbie...”

“Don’t worry, detective Herbie will be fine. I know what I’m doing. I’ll keep you updated,” and before Kieran could object, he hung up.

“Fuck,” he muttered, and looked back again at the station. He took a deep breath, then marched into the reception and placed both hands on the counter.

The bored looking desk sergeant who was sat there looked up at him with wide eyes.

“My name is Kieran Lockley, and I killed my parents”.
