Chantelle

The sky had darkened, and it was almost time to meet outside the school. It was a ten-minute walk, and she went downstairs to ask if she could go to her friend Sandras to revise her mathematics because there was a test coming up in a few weeks time.

Her ‘parents’ were in the front room and usually had the door wide open, so sneaking out would take a good degree of stealth. There wasn’t too much she could do, as she didn’t want to be late.

“Really,” said her father, reading a newspaper, “at this time of night. That’s unlike you. I’m afraid the answer is no. If you wish to revise with Sandra then you can do it remotely over your laptop. It’s far too late for you to be out at this time,” then he went back to his paper, and that was that she knew. He wasn’t changing his mind.

Walking into the kitchen, she opened the cutlery drawer and quickly found a small black-handled steak knife, hid it at her side then went back into the hall and shrugged on her jacket from the hat-stand, then left the house, closed the door behind her, and ran, wondering whether she would be returning. If she did she would simply say they had no internet connection and she needed to revise with Sandra as she had a textbook and I really want to pass these tests, I’m sorry.

Chantelle gripped the knife inside her pocket, jealous of Boyd because he’d killed his ‘parents’, and it was very tempting to do the same.
