Kieran

“I couldn’t help it,” said Brett, “he found out that you asked me to get information”.

76

“Well you have to be the worst spy in the world,” Kieran said. “Still, I’m more inclined to believe in science, so maybe they really were traumatised being lost, and those pensioners really did commit suicide. That was what was suspected.

How they died is a mystery but I’m sure the police will work it out…right I’m off to meet the others. Just forget it okay. School isn’t going to tell you where that supervisor lives”.

He left, leaving Brett alone in the house.

Still, Kieran had a sneaking suspicion that something wasn’t quite right as he travelled three bus-stops to a small park with walled gardens where youth would come and play parkour, much to the chagrin of the volunteer gardener who could do nothing but disapprove.

As he sat on the grass with Bean-head and Spike, he tried to forget about it and watched as his friend stood on top of a five-foot wall and back-flipped from it, landing heavily on his feet and crashing backwards. He took a few seconds to get back to his feet and watched as another friend climbed up on the wall.

Maybe it would be better to get a second opinion, he thought, and decided he would tell Spike.

“Spike, do you believe in possession?” he didn’t wait for an answer, but just continued: “It’s just that something’s been bugging me lately. My little brother went on an outdoor pursuits trip,”

“Yes I heard about that. The poor kids were traumatised weren’t they? getting lost. Was your brother one of them?”

“Yes, but he didn’t get lost. He told me they were all forced into a van by some pensioners. Then later they wind up dead. Apparent suicide in some old clubhouse or something. Then the same kids just turn back up claiming to have got lost, but they’ve changed. None of them are the same, talking like adults.

Seven dead pensioners. Seven lost children that now act differently. Sounds like possession, but I can’t believe in that because I believe in science”. Spike just looked at him blankly. It was clear he didn’t have an answer. He thought along the same lines as Kieran, as he was after all, studying A-level Biology.

“Possessions are fantasy,” he said, “no evidence for them”.

“You can’t disprove it,” said Bean-head. “That does sound suspicious though.

Science can’t answer everything. Scientists are more interested in building new weapons. Finding easier ways to kill each other. They don’t focus on the paranormal. Science is not investigating paranormal stuff. They just wave it away because they think they know everything. A lot of scientists are arrogant 77

know-it-alls, and ignore any evidence they don’t like. Even so-called scientific facts need looking at sometimes. There’s loads of stuff about possession. Loads of cases of paranormal stuff, but no-ones investigating. Maybe one scientist many years ago did one experiment, and that was that. That’s all the science refers to. Just one dude who came to the conclusion he wanted to because he’s bloody biased. Well I call it bollocks. Scientists think they have all the answers.

Well they fucking don’t”.

“Ye,” put in Spike, “imagine if you told a neanderthal that in years to come we could communicate around the world in seconds, or take photographs, you’d have been put in the loony bin, Whatever a loony bin would look like in those times”.

“Probably would have bashed your head in,” said Bean-head.

“I think I believe in possessions,” he continued, “but what do you want to do about it?”

“Well, if they’ve been possessed by old men, then what’s happened to the real kids?”

“Well if the souls have taken over. Then it’s just gonna be one soul per body.

Those kids souls will have gone. Probably to the afterlife. Another thing science doesn’t investigate. Not when they need to make nuclear bombs more powerful.

All I’m saying is there’s a lot more to this world than what is known”.

“Yep, I agree with that,” said Spike.

“But how can I prove it? I can’t just go up to one of the kids and say are you an old man? Did you try and kill my little brother with a knife?”

“They tried to kill him?” said Spike.

“Apparently so. Brett is adamant that he was chased, and the others were kidnapped in a van”.

“But now one of them said that it was all a hoax. The blokes drove them out somewhere in the countryside, let them go, and that was how they got lost. The supervisor put them up to it according to Brett. I want to find out where he lives so I can ask him if he did, but I’ve got no way of finding out. I can’t just ask at the school. It’ll be confidential and all that”. The others agreed.

“So let me get this right,” said Bean-head. “They’re out, orienteering wasn’t it?

A van pulls up and kidnaps seven children. Leaves one behind who gets chased by an old man with a knife. That in itself has got to be terrifying for a kid of that age. Then they come back hours later claiming to have got lost, and they’ve all 78

seemed to have changed personality. Talking above their age. Meanwhile seven bodies of pensioners have been found nearby. They’re deaths a mystery. Those kids are possessed mate”.

Spike said, nothing, but got up and walked across to the others to join in the parkour.

Kieran lay back on the grass, arms splayed out.

“They fucking are aren’t they”.
