Brett
School was back to normal the following day. The police were efficient and everything was done by the book. They came in, assessed the situation, and came to the conclusion that there were no suspicious circumstances.
Half of the following mornings assembly was taken up with a memorial service for Boomer. Two teachers gave a reading of religious texts and one of his friends came up and spoke how he would miss him. Didn’t break down into tears though.
School was seemingly back to normal by the afternoon.
Brett crossed paths with Sam in the playground and got talking.
“Pity about Boomer,“ Brett said.
“Is it though? I heard he was a cunt,” Brett was quite surprised by Sam using that word. Most of his friends, which included the majority on the field-trip would very infrequently use bad language. Not so often and flippant. Some kids almost needed a run up to say rude words, and then when they said it would blush.

Brett thought it was a good opportunity to do what Kieran had asked, although
‘spy’ was a word that encompassed a lot. Spy?..how?
So he thought he would simply ask a lot of questions and take the answers back to Kieran. It was almost quite enjoyable. Slight subterfuge. Playing a little spy game.
Ignorant of the fact it could potentially be deadly.
“You know that supervisor that lost us on the field-trip? Do you know where he lives?” Brett asked.
“Nope, haven’t a clue. Why do you want to know that?”
“Just…you know, wondering? To ask him if it really was a hoax that he put those old men up to kidnapping us”.
Sam frowned and was silent for a few moments. Brett continued:
“Ian said it was hoax that he put those old men up to it. To kidnap us and drive out further into the country then let us go”.
“Yes…” Sam said, “it was a hoax. Those old men were just having a laugh. But if Ian told you, why wouldn’t you believe him and need to get it from the supervisor?”.
“Er…because. Just to…you know, check that it really was”.
“Why wouldn’t ‘you’ believe Ian? Because you seem like a gullible kid. Why do you want to know where the supervisor lives?”
It was the long silence that gave Brett away.
“It’s me brother Kieran. Thinks your possessed by those old men,” Sam’s face became serious.
“Thinks we’re possessed by those pensioners?”
“Wants me to get some evidence ‘cos you’ve all been behaving different, and the bodies of pensioners were found in a building and he’s suspicious”.
“Is he now?” Sam slowly backed away, then turned and went into the throng of children.
Brett just watched the place where he vanished for a few seconds, then shrugged.

Sam managed to gather together all the field-trip ‘children’, except Dorothy.
“Okay quick meeting. Just to say that we’re nearly hidden properly. No more therapy. Our parents seem to be alright with us. We had a trauma, and that was that. But Brett who was with us on the trip has a brother who is suspicious of us.
Says he thinks were possessed by those pensioners. The bodies were found, and our behaviour has changed, so I’m guessing he’s playing detective”.
“Okay,” said Glenn, “we just need to get rid of both of them”.
“Yes,” Sam said, “we kill both Brett and Kieran, and that should be everything then. We’ll be hidden for years until it’s time to change bodies”.
They all agreed.
