Kieran

61

Although he didn’t have much physique to be a fireman, Kieran still thought he could cut muster. He knew he would need a physical and medical check, but also knew he couldn’t just walk into it. There would be extensive training, and wasn’t sure he would get the opportunity. However, he could but try, nearing the end of his college days where it was time to make a career decision. That crossroads in a teenager’s path when life choices had to be made.

So you’ve come to a fork in the road. Left or right? Once you’ve chosen one, and stepped into it, there was no going back for the other option.

He decided he would apply for an apprenticeship, and was starting to fill out the online form on his old laptop on the kitchen table when Brett blustered in.

“Kieran, Kieran guess what?” but he couldn’t wait and said it anyway.

“It was a hoax. It was all a hoax. Ian told me that our supervisor put the pensioners up to it”.

Kieran leaned back on the wooden kitchen chair, folded his arms and frowned at Brett.

“A hoax. Really?”

“Ye, Ian told me those old men drove them out in the country, and then let them go. That’s how they got lost”.

“Sorry Brett, but I’m not having that. All your mates have changed personality haven’t they? Jordan wasn’t Jordan the other night. Also, the bodies of seven pensioners were found in an old bowling clubhouse in the same area you lot went missing, and there’s you banging on about old people”.

“They died?” Brett said with wide eyes. “What happened?”

“Suicide apparently. Just like that therapist in your school. Sorry Brett, something’s not right here. I don’t believe in the supernatural, but it almost seems like the kids were possessed by those pensioners. I don’t know how, but I think I want to get to the bottom of this”.

“But it was a hoax. Ian said”.

“Okay then. I know that supervisor on your field trip was sacked, but is there anyway we can find him and ask if he put them up to it?”.

“Don’t know,” said Brett. “Ian said it was a hoax,” he muttered, then left to go upstairs.

Kieran realised that he had soured Brett’s mood. He believed it was a hoax and that cheered him up. Made him feel better.

Kieran thought perhaps if he delved into it more. Found out what was really going on, like a detective, he could apply for the police instead. If he could show that he could uncover what was going on here, that may put him in good stead for an application to the police.

He cleared away the fireman application and shut down his laptop, following Brett up into his room where he was lying on the bed, hands behind his head.

“Listen,” he said, “okay, maybe it was a hoax, and that bloke did put them up to it, then they all went the clubhouse and topped themselves. That could happen.

That is possible, but I need a bit more evidence than what Ian said. So could you do me a favour and report things back to me”. Brett sat up.

“Like a spy”.

“Er…yes. Tell me if the others are still acting odd. If you can find out where the supervisor lives, that kind of thing. Just tell me stuff so I can be sure they’re not possessed”.

Brett simply stared at him for a few moments.

“Alright,” he said, and lay back down. Kieran left.
