Chapter 2A: Genetics, Environment, and What Parents Can (and Can't) Control
A common early question from parents is some version of: "Is this our fault?" It's worth addressing directly and honestly, because the answer shapes how parents approach both prevention and treatment decisions.
What's Largely Genetic
What's Largely Environmental or Behavioral
Why This Distinction Matters
If a problem is largely genetic, the honest, most useful role for a parent is early detection through timely evaluations, not guilt over having somehow "caused" it. If a problem is largely behavioral, there is real, practical value in early, patient habit intervention, as described in Chapter 6. Most real-world cases involve some mixture of both factors, and a good orthodontist will usually describe which factors seem most relevant for your specific child rather than treating the two as interchangeable.
Very few orthodontic problems are anyone's "fault." The genuinely useful question is never who's to blame, but what can still be done, and when.
