Chapter 23I: A Final Pre-Treatment Checklist

Before starting any new phase of treatment — preventive, interceptive, or comprehensive — this checklist summarizes the key questions and preparations covered throughout this guide.

• Understand exactly which specific problem is being treated, and why now rather than later.
• Have a written treatment plan and cost estimate, including what is and isn't included.
• Know the expected duration of active treatment and the follow-up visit schedule.
• Understand what's expected of your child at home (wear time, hygiene, dietary restrictions).
• Know what counts as an emergency and how to reach the clinic if one arises.
• Have a plan for how you'll support your child emotionally through the process, appropriate to their age.
• Understand the retention plan that will follow active treatment, even before treatment begins.

Walking into any stage of treatment with clear answers to all of the above tends to make the entire experience feel considerably more manageable — for both parent and child.
