Chapter 20: Questions Worth Asking Your Orthodontist
A thoughtful, well-run orthodontic practice will welcome all of the following questions. Bringing a written list to appointments — and asking your child's questions on their behalf if they're too young or shy to ask directly — is a completely normal and encouraged part of the process.
• What specific problem are we treating, and what happens if we simply continue monitoring instead?
• Is this the right time for this treatment, or would waiting change the outcome or the options available?
• How long is this specific phase of treatment expected to take, and how many visits will it require?
• What does my child need to do at home for this to work as expected (wear time, care, hygiene)?
• What would count as an emergency versus something that can wait for the next scheduled visit?
• If this is an interceptive treatment, is a second, comprehensive phase likely to be needed afterward?
