Chapter 16: Clear Aligners (Invisalign and Similar Systems)
How Clear Aligners Work
Clear aligner systems use a series of custom-made, transparent, removable trays, each worn for a set period (commonly one to two weeks) before moving to the next tray in the series. Each tray is slightly different from the last, gradually guiding teeth toward their final planned position. Treatment is planned upfront using a 3D digital scan, allowing both the orthodontist and patient to preview an approximate final result before treatment begins.
Who Tends to Choose Aligners
Clear aligners have become popular with both image-conscious teenagers and adults, in part because of their near-invisibility and in part because they are removable for eating and brushing. Teen-specific aligner systems often include additional features, such as wear-time indicators and compliance tabs, to help account for the more variable cooperation seen in younger patients compared to adults.
What Aligner Treatment Requires From the Patient
Aligners only work as well as they're worn. Because they're removable, consistent daily wear time depends far more on patient cooperation than with fixed braces — an important consideration when choosing between the two for a younger, less consistently compliant child.
