Chapter 11: Crowding and Early Space Management
Crowding occurs when there isn't enough space in the jaw for teeth to align without overlapping, rotating, or erupting out of position. During the interceptive stage, orthodontists distinguish between crowding that is likely to resolve as the jaw continues growing and permanent teeth continue erupting, and crowding severe enough to warrant early space-related intervention.

What Parents Should Know
Not all crowding seen during the mixed-dentition years needs early correction — a degree of apparent crowding in the early mixed dentition, sometimes called an "ugly duckling" stage, often resolves naturally as more permanent teeth erupt and the jaw continues to grow. This is precisely why regular monitoring, rather than immediate intervention at the first sign of crowding, is the appropriate default in many cases — and why a second opinion is reasonable if early intervention for crowding is recommended without a clear explanation of why it can't simply be monitored.
