Chapter 7A: Nutrition Through Treatment — A Practical Food Guide

Beyond the general "avoid hard and sticky foods" guidance given in Chapter 17, it helps to have a concrete sense of what a typical week of eating looks like at different points in treatment.

Foods Generally Safe Throughout Treatment

• Soft fruits (bananas, berries, melon), and harder fruits cut into small pieces (apples, pears).
• Cooked vegetables, and raw vegetables cut small or grated.
• Pasta, rice, soft breads, and most grains.
• Yogurt, cheese, and other soft dairy.
• Well-cooked, tender meats, fish, and eggs.

Foods to Avoid With Fixed Appliances (Braces, Expanders, Fixed Retainers)

• Hard candies, ice, and whole nuts, which can crack brackets or bend wires.
• Sticky foods like caramel, toffee, and chewing gum, which can pull brackets loose.
• Whole raw apples, carrots, or corn on the cob eaten by biting directly with the front teeth — cut these into smaller pieces instead.
• Very hard bread crusts or crackers, which can be uncomfortable, particularly in the first days after an adjustment.

Foods to Be Mindful of With Removable Appliances (Aligners, Functional Appliances)

Since these are removed for eating, the food restriction list is much shorter — the bigger consideration is remembering to remove the appliance before eating or drinking anything other than water, and cleaning both the appliance and the teeth thoroughly before reinserting it.

A Sample Soft-Food Day (First Few Days After an Adjustment)

Meal

Example

Breakfast

Oatmeal or scrambled eggs

Lunch

Soft pasta with a mild sauce

Snack

Yogurt or a smoothie

Dinner

Mashed vegetables with tender, well-cooked protein

Soreness after an adjustment is temporary, usually lasting only two or three days — a short-term soft-food approach during that window, rather than a long-term restriction, is generally all that's needed.
