Chapter 5: Space Maintainers
One of the few appliances used during the preventive stage is the space maintainer. When a baby tooth is lost significantly earlier than expected — due to decay, injury, or extraction — the surrounding teeth can begin drifting into the empty space within weeks. If this happens before the permanent tooth beneath it is ready to erupt, the permanent tooth can become blocked out, rotated, or impacted.
