Chapter Four

The Air I Breath

The whole of 2024 was a fiery battlefield. When I moved one piece, my mother countered it. It felt like an endless chess match. Tempers flared. I said things I wish I hadn’t, but I couldn't stand by and watch my fiancée be disrespected and abused. We brought in pastors, elders, mentors, hoping someone could talk sense into the situation. But nothing worked.

Then came the spiritual accusations. These were wild, heartbreaking, and painful to hear. My mom began alleging that my fiancée’s mother was dangerous, even evil and that her own life was in danger if I married into that family. Still, I stood my ground. I wasn’t buying those

These were some of the darkest days for me and the woman I loved. We prayed together, fasted together, cried together. We were two hearts trying to build peace in a storm that wouldn’t stop.

At one point, I told her, “Let’s forget my mom. Let’s just get married here in America. I’ll marry you, even if it’s at the blindside of my family. I don’t care

anymore; I love you, and I’m not letting you go.” Those words gave her comfort, because she knew I meant every bit of it. I repeated it again and again: “If your family is okay with it, I’ll marry you without mine. It defies cultural tradition, but I’ve had enough.” And I meant it. I was ready to risk everything for love.

There were times my mother even threatened to disown me. But at that point, I honestly didn’t care anymore. She knows I love her as a son, and I always will; but I also knew that she had overstepped her boundaries. There’s a way to express disagreement as a mother.

It should be done with grace and much care. But she just overstepped many boundaries, and I met her boot for boot. I just wouldn’t allow her abuse a lady this gentle and sweet.

In all of this, I kept providing for my mom. I still sent her money for her daily runs and needs. I didn’t stop being a son, even though I was deeply wounded. My love for her never changed; but neither did my commitment to the woman I had chosen. The one I called Me Maame.

Even when my mother rejected her, I stood firm. Even when my family caused her pain, I held her

tighter. Even when everything else around us was falling apart, I never let her go.

They said I had to choose a side,

But love had long since drawn the line.

A mother’s wrath, a lover’s tears

I stood for love, despite my fears.

There were days I would wake up at dawn, sit on my bed, and cry. The weight of it all was too much. We were both students; young, burdened, and hopeful. We were also juggling school, life, and love, while carrying a storm far greater than either of us could have imagined.
