24. X-RAY YOUR THINKING
While we don't know what our next thought will be – we do have control over the habitual direction we allow our thoughts to take.
Update your "Mind App" now – just as we need to update the software programs on our computers and personal devices now and then, we need to learn to do a better job of updating our thinking habits.
When a computer program isn't working right, we don't blame the computer or phone and throw it out a window.
We look for troubleshooting with the software or for the recent update that we just installed. Many times, it will happily turn out that others have reported the same bug(s) and a free update or patch is available to fix the issue.
Other times, it turns out there's a bigger incompatibility going on and we need to upgrade at a cost to the newest software from that company, or from their competitors in the marketplace.
But in all this updating and learning new features, we overlook the fact that our own minds are far superior to any computer that will ever be invented, and yet we take it for granted that it's just "there" and doesn't need any maintenance.
Our own minds get overlooked—because we never learned that we have any control over our thoughts.
It's as if we walk through life under this burden of habitual thinking that's been passed down generation after generation. Even people who are considered the philosophers or intellectuals of their age will be seen to have a minimal or off balanced view about use of thoughts, because we'll see they may have been successful in one area but very unhappy in another area of their life, health or wellbeing.
Seven billion people are walking around on this planet with countless Mind Apps in operation all the time.
These Apps are so bug-ridden that we'd scream in horror if we opened a kitchen cupboard and encountered such an infestation of pests.
What if we could peer under each other's heads and see what was going on?
Actually, we can get a look, by simply noticing the person's outer results. Some are obvious and in fact have become clichés such as the wallflower who has self-esteem issues and must have a Belief App running that says, "I am painfully shy, nobody likes me, I never know what to say to anybody, I wish I could go home."
A person who seems to trip over his own feet may have a Mind App programmed to say, "I am clumsy, I never look where I'm going, I don't have enough sense to come in out of the rain."
Now, how about doing a diagnostic checkup by X-raying your own thinking habits?
Start getting curious about your relationships and social life, your job, your health, your finances and every aspect of your life, and imagine that you can look right through those outer circumstances and see the bare bones of your belief system.
If you don't like what you see, realize that your work lies within, in becoming more congruent with the beliefs and Mind App that you want to update. If you realize you aren't getting anywhere in your job, for example, notice that your lack of confidence is holding you back, and begin installing new software that supports your self-respect.
