20. TRUST YOURSELF

If you have a hard time trusting others, or if you have a history of being mistreated, abused or conned by an untrustworthy person…stop and take a look within because your life is trying to point out a potential area of growth.

In fact, trust could very well be the exact value that you need to change in order to take quantum leaps in your life once your issues around it are resolved.

Often a stumbling block such as lack of trust in yourself will show up in many ways. You may procrastinate on important projects, not trusting yourself to complete them correctly and therefore putting off starting them until the last minute.

You may display jealousy in a relationship to the point of suspecting the other person of wrongdoing no matter how innocent they may be in actuality.

Other ways a lack of trust in yourself show up can be at times when you hedge your bets, can't make a decision about what to wear, or what to order in a restaurant, or what car to buy.

If you look "out there" for advice, constantly asking others to help you make even basic decisions, then you have abdicated your self-trust to others, and along with trust you give up your ability to make decisions and to be the master of your fate.

It's easy to get angry.

It's easy to throw tantrums.

It's easy to blame others.

It takes trust in higher principles, and it takes self-discipline to be a man or woman of integrity.

Games of the ego always include ways for the tyrant to attempt control over the other person. This is the basis for all types of abuse: emotional, verbal, physical. It is an indication that the tyrant – no matter how well they hide behind a façade of grins and joviality – is seeking to make sense of his world by dominating everyone in his sphere.

What are some ways you can build your level of trust in yourself and others? Start with something small. Commit to making quick decisions. This doesn't mean racing out to the mall on a shopping spree and allowing impulse buying to take over. It means trusting your first thought. It means opening to the intuition that is available to you. If someone offers you a job and your instant thought is "I'd hate working here!" don't override that thought. It's your true reaction. Decline the job. If you must take it for immediate financial needs, continue job-hunting and get out of that place as quickly as you can.

When someone asks you how you feel about a particular topic, if you've learned the habit of people-pleasing or being on guard, you may pretend you haven't made up your mind, or put them off with some other vague reply.

The truth is, we always know our reaction in an instant. If you're in a bad relationship, you don't have to think about whether you do or do not want to be out of it. You KNOW deep inside that you want out.

But on the heels of that pure clean knowledge, come all the layered responses that stem from lack of trust in yourself to know what is best for you and to take action to achieve it. I know I should end the relationship, but he'd get so mad…where would I go…my friends would be shocked…my family would be angry…at least I'm in a relationship so I should be glad about that…what can I do anyway…might as well stay.

When we learn to trust ourselves, we make decisions much more quickly and easily. We learn to align with our core values instead of undermining and sabotaging ourselves.
