Following the 1898 season arm trouble, no doubt a function of the enormous number of innings hurled, and personal problems kept him out of baseball for two years. In 1900, he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds for Christy Mathewson. In 1901, Rusie pitched poorly in three games before retiring. Rusie died in Seattle, Washington, in 1942.
