Boston was the game’s pre-eminent team, much like the Yankees after acquiring Babe Ruth. Coming off two pennant winning seasons in 1891 and 1892, the fundamentally same Boston Beaneaters were expected to win again in 1893, rule changes and all, and they did. However, challenges presented themselves in 1894. By the end of the first month's campaign, on April 30th, Boston had dropped to third position. Baltimore was in fifth place and New York was down at ninth in the twelve team race. It was still early.
