Beyond there is nothing but blackness. Our young friend is headed due east and seems to be 100 miles or so from the edge. A few miles back—near the spot where the circle had been deliberately etched out in the sand—lies the parachute, marooned in the blind-ing desert whiteness of a perpetual midday sun.
