from the right nostril and breathing out from

the left one.

When we just start, there shouldn’t be any

breath retention, and the duration of

inhalation should be the same as the duration

of exhalation.

You can notice that in normal life we exhale

very fast. When we go for Pranayamas, we try

to make our breath longer. But what happens

is: we first breathe out almost all the air we

have inside and then just push ourselves to

continue the exhalation until we reach a

certain number of counts.

So, in the beginning, we need to focus on

breathing from the belly and making our

breath smooth, i.e., taking in and letting out

the same amount of air throughout the

inhalation and exhalation. Think of an air

balloon with a hole it in. The air goes out

slowly and gradually until the ballon becomes

completely flat. Your breath should be like

that. To master this skill, we need about three

months.
