Chapter Five

About one o’clock, Dean left with Caslyn. They went to the Hill View hotel to sleep. He took her home before going back to the party. Margot was there dancing alone. He took a seat and watched her. When the song finished playing, she took a seat beside him.

“Both Britney and Tena accused me of being a prostitute. They called me a whore, a call girl and a harlot. Did you do it with Caslyn and probably came back hoping that I was available for you tonight?”

“Of course not, I simply took her home as she wanted to sleep.”

“Well, I’m sorry, that’s what I’ll soon be going home to do too. I don’t want any of your women to accuse me of trying to take you away from them. Both Britney and Tena were quite fresh with me and even Ashley too.”

“I never encouraged those girls to be fresh with you. They’re on their own as far as I’m concerned.”

He drank some more of his sorrel beer. She took some more of her melon beer.

“I’m a decent girl. I just don’t go to bed with any man. Britney and Tena are behaving as if I just go to bed with any man. I went to bed with you because I like you.”

He bought food and drinks for both of them and they sat and had it. They soon resumed dancing again. At around four thirty that morning he took her home.

Sunday night, there was a social put on by the Keswick sports club. Dean took Britney along. Some persons were dancing while others were playing table games. Karl was dancing with Carlene when Zenya pulled him away and they started to quarrel.

“What’s the matter with you, Zenya? Why are you preventing me from dancing with Karl. I told you that he belongs to me too. I have children for him. You don’t have any for him. I have more claims to him than you.”

“Carlene, please leave Karl alone. Why are you still looking him? You know that he’s my man.”

Wendel parted the quarrel and started dancing with Zenya angering Karl who went back to dancing with Carlene.

“Zenya, you’re complaining about me dancing with Carlene and you’re dancing with Wendel.”

“He’s my baby father. He’s just helping out a bad situation.”

“Wendel, this is the second party, I’ve attended with you, and you’ve abandoned me for Zenya. Next time you invite me out, I’m going to tell you to take Audrey and leave me alone. You’ve denied it, but I think you want her back,” Brandy told him.

“All I’m doing is dancing with her. What’s wrong with that? I have a child with her. Both you and Karl and even Audrey too want me to treat her like we’re enemies for whatever reasons I don’t know.”

“Please don’t try to get me mixed up in you and her affairs,” Brandy told him.

Two more songs played and he continued dancing with Zenya. Karl also continued dancing with Carlene. When the songs finished playing, Wendel went over to where Brandy was sitting on a long bench and drinking a sorrel beer. He tried taking her hand to lead her to the dance floor.

“Go back and dance with Zenya and leave me alone. I don’t know why I let you persuade me to come here with you. Now I’m here with you, you hardly want to dance with me. If you want somebody to dance with, why don’t you call Audrey?”

He sauntered off to buy a beer and some food. Brandy went to play

some table games. Karl returned to dancing with Zenya. Wendel was eating his food and drinking his beer near to Brandy.

“Can we dance after I finish eating and drinking?”

You’re so mean, you only bought food for yourself.”

“I didn’t know you were hungry?”

She laughed.

“What did you expect me to be? God, I didn’t know you were so mean or else I wouldn’t go out with you. No wonder Zenya left you and Audrey is on her way out.”

“Don’t believe everything you hear.”

He took out some money to give her.

But she shook her head and stood up.

“Do you want me to leave the social and go home and probably never talk to you again?”

“Why, what am I doing wrong?”

“You’re not being a lady’s gentleman. You should go and buy the food. I know that you’re thinking that because you’re providing the money I should go and buy it, but that’s not how any good man would behave.”

Without any further argument he went off to buy the food. When he returned, they sat and ate and drank to their fullest before they resumed dancing.

Dean went to dance with Tena angering Britney.

“Dean, I wonder if you know what you’re doing? You brought me to this party and you leave and go and dance with this girl and you know that we don’t speak to each other.”

She tried to separate them, but Tena held on to him too tight for her to pull them apart.

“What the hell’s the matter with you, Britney? Can’t you see that I’m dancing with him?”

“I’m not blind, Tena. It’s him I’m talking to not you.”

“I want to know what’s the meaning of this? Are you abandoning me for Tena? Answer me, Dean?”

“I’m not abandoning you for her. I’m just dancing with her. I’ll soon return to dancing with you.”

“I’m not going to allow you to dance with Britney again. I don’t know why you brought her to this party instead of me,” Tena declared.

When the song finished playing, he went to dance with Margot angering, Tena, Britney and Ashley.

“Dean, what the hell are you doing, abandoning me for a harlot like her? All she does is go around and sleep with the next available man,” Tena told him.

“Go to hell, Tena and you too, Britney. If I’m a prostitute, then so are both of you. Neither of you can tell me the name of one man I’ve ever been to bed with.”

“Everybody knows about you, Margot. I wonder how you’re not on the backroad tonight selling your body,” Britney said.

Margot burst out laughing but continued dancing with Dean.

“I told both of you, girls, that I was along with him. As one of his women I’m entitled to dance with him.”

“Dean, you can stay with her. Britney, you can stay and fight Margot and Ashley for him, but I’m going home,” Tena said and rushed out of the party and got into a waiting taxi and went home.
