Chapter Nineteen
Cameron watched as Ben left the room with his cup of holy water and crucifix. There was no way this was going to end well. He just hoped that Ben returned soon, and the two of them could leave.
He took a bedsheet and fashioned it into a sling for his injured arm. Suitcases were packed and ready to go. Tara’s backpack was lying on the bed, with the book beside it. Cameron packed the book carefully in the backpack among all of the classified documents.
Cameron wondered how much trouble they could get into for having those documents. If there was any backlash, it was the government’s fault, not his or Ben’s. Besides, that would be more of Ben’s issue to deal with. As soon as he was out of this house, Cameron would never again have anything to do with the paranormal.
Cameron checked his watch. Ben had been gone for ten minutes. He would wait another ten, but then, he was leaving.
He paced anxiously. Was there any reason he had to stay in this room? Why couldn’t he go ahead and carry the luggage downstairs, to be ready to make a quick getaway? That seemed like the best course of action.
Hoisting the backpack onto his injured shoulder was the worst part. Once he squirmed his way into the backpack straps, Cameron re-adjusted the sling. He grabbed the handles of both suitcases with his good hand. He was getting out of this house.
As he opened the door, Cameron was met with a surprise that caused his heart to sink. Standing on the other side of the door was the ghost of the soldier. He stepped backwards, tripping over his feet and falling to the floor. The soldier stepped into the room and drew his combat knife. He raised the knife and plunged it downward rapidly. Cameron felt the burning and tearing as the soldier stabbed him with the efficiency of a machine. As Cameron lay there on the floor, dying, his last thoughts were of Ben.
