Chapter 23
The control room beneath hanger two had fallen silent with the realization that the plan to achieve political insulation had been far more successful than hoped for. The CIA agents work was finished, and they left the room without a word. No doubt, their job is one largely without morality, dedicated solely to the maintaining of power through secrecy. Doctor Stewart, on the other hand, was not so accustomed to this type of thinking, but did his best to bring a close to the events of the day. “Okay,” he began. “Contact the FBI. They'll handle it from here.” His specialty was science, not clandestine operations, cover stories or the taking of human life. As he stood in front of the control console, he thought there should be something more, something that could be said of the young lives he had, only hours ago, praised for their genius. But there was nothing. No words would be sufficient to honor those who died for nothing more than politics.
Still standing in the control room, he began to feel soiled by his participation in such a senseless act. Certainly, there could have been another way. But it was time to get back to his office, as the call of the mundane duties of his job whispered in his ear. Finally, before leaving the control room, he turned to the project director.
“Hey, do you know where the chapel is?”
