Taking a deep breath

We still will keep watch but also we know that the last one will be deeper in the hole that he is hiding in. All I tell my people is to keep vigilant. Keep watch. What I did not tell them is that I am taking Charrel away for as long as I can.

The magician knows and will watch the groups. Per my instructions, he is not to tell anyone that we have left town. I know of a spot that I need to take her to recover.

I have her close her eyes and I have us appear at the spot. She is in tears. It is a cabin that I bought when the first game became a hit. This cabin is one that she knows very well. It is the same cabin the future me brought her to when I rescued her.

She ran inside almost as if the old me was in there. She was happy to see some of the same things that she saw her first time but I could see that she also was a little sad. She just whispered to that same bed.

“I miss you old man.” She blew a kiss towards the man she saw in her mind.

Now looking at me, “I know that you are one in the same and it might seem silly bit I loved that old man. It is actually a different love than I have for you now. He was my rescuer. He saved me and cherished me in his way. You have all the same traits he had. I love you the same way but different. I find it hard to express myself on this.”

I gather her into a hug. “I know exactly what you mean. Don’t forget, I sent those memories back with you. I can tell you that he knew of your love for him. He was able to pass knowing that he finally had true love. What you did not know is that you were his first and only love. He never had a special person in his life until you came. You made him whole like you do for me. You still are my first and only love.

Know this, you now have made two men to know what true feelings mean. You have made two men truly happy. That old man was selfish. He wanted more time with you and knew how to do just that. I thank him and I will make the most of the wonderful blessing he sent me.”

Now she sinks her head into my chest and just says, “Thank you.”

She goes over and looks at the kitchen area. She just shakes her head. “When is the last time you were here?”

I tell her that it has been around a few years. She points to the now fossilized food remnants on the dishes in the sink. All I say is “I planned to wash them when I got back but I got distracted.”

I run for the door and disappear. I come back with a cart full of groceries, new dishes and flowers. Of all things, she points to the dishes, holds her hand over her mouth, “Those are the dishes he had when I first made that breakfast I told you about.”

I took the ones in the sink and cupboard out. They went into the trash heap. When I come in, she again is giving me the evil eye. “So that is how that pile started. When I got here, it was from where you threw those to within reach of the bottom of the sink window.”

“Then I have quite a few years before I need to find another place to dump my trash.” We both now laugh. I ask her if she feels better. She says she does and that she really feels at home here.

“I was rescued. Fought battles and such. We always came back to here. This truly feels like home but could you please do one thing for me? Would you please make a trash pit. A deep one because, when all this is over, would it be possible for us to move here permanently. Where you live is nice but we can make this our home.”

With my magic, I make a deep cement pit and now burn everything that is around the cabin. After all I don’t want guests to think we keep a dirty home. Also I improve the bath and kitchen. The size of the cabin is bigger.

We are out in the middle of no where. I have decided to make a surprise for her. I love magic. Idea to reality is quick. I have her come outside. There is an area that now has a wooden slat small building that is skightly elevated to have a few steps up to the porch.

I open the door for her and all she finds is a shelf with baskets. Off to the side is an area where one would sit and wash themselves clean. I had her get undressed while I was doing the same thing. Put my clothes in the baskets held our clothes. She did the same. Hand in hand I walked her over and had her sit. With the shower hose, I wet her down, washed her hair then her back, then every inch of her. She did the same for me.

All rinsed clean, I pulled back the curtain. There was an open air pool that was just at body temperature. Not too hot as to limit our time in the pool. We sat and just let is relax us. Now I do something that she never expected and you would never expect to be written in this romantic setting.

She sniffs the air and looks at me. There floating on a raft is a pizza and cold drinks. We both laugh and eat. I tell her that it is because we need to be different. “We will still do the romantic things but we need to just relax. Do silly things. Laugh. That pizza raft drifted off in the waves we started to make. We dried off and continued relaxing in our home.

Finally, the Leach

Next few days were wonderful but wouldn’t you know, just when we were starting to really relax, we hear from the magician.

We again are getting reports of refugees now going missing but this time, they are mindlessly walking off. Suddenly looking like they are no longer in their bodies. Not quite but almost zombie like. They had no will other than to walk off.

That was the end of our relaxation. I need to see those reports.

A few have been informed by the refugees that a few have been stopped by their families but they need to be bound to something or they will escape. Charrel, myself and the magician go to where one is being held.

The family tells us that they have seen this on their home world when a person needed to have energy in reserve. We are told that the person never comes back mentally. Most just die.

The last one we need to eliminate is the leach.

In the future, he was large, in his mind, deserving of only the best and he could take it from you without breaking a sweat. It may cost him a few batteries but what are they? Replaceable with just anyone within visual range.

The group gathers and we discuss the search method of finding him. I just say that he will be in the biggest place he can steal. The only problem is we need to watch the birds. Crows especially. I have Charrel tell them about batteries.

“A leach is called that because their power supply is feeding off the magical energy of magical people. They do not even bother with a low level. Once they latch on to one, they destroy the mind to the point that only the brain stem is functioning. Draining one of the refugees is death to that one. They are just left where they fall. Even if you can capture a battery, the mind is gone.”

Now I take it up again. “That is the reason of watching the carrion birds. They will be feeding on the dead. Just so you know, it is considered a mercy if you kill a battery. Making that one live like a zombie is considered cruel. Now keep an eye to the sky on the higher end homes but he may have changed. He may be in the poorer sections but I do not believe he would stay there long.

The magician says something that is right in our face but none saw it but him. Why don’t we just follow the ones that are like that. Wouldn’t he have them come to hin?

Charrel and I remember something we did on the future battle.

Charrel now tells us that he needs line of sight to make someone a battery. “He would need to have a van or something to pick that one up. He has to see someone to destroy the upper brain. I don’t think that he would just let them wander the streets hoping that they don’t get runover.”

Plans change. Now on top of bird watching, we need to watch the batteries and see who picks them up.

Everyone, before they leave, is given the block spell. That will block a leach from taking control. “Make sure you pass that on to everyone of ours. Again, no refugees will be allowed in sight of the battle. All you need to tell them that there is a leach and they will gladly stay away.”

You would think that it would be hard to find him. Two others were eliminated. Power does not mean numbers, ego and such. True power is having plans and knowing what each of your team and teammates are doing. Know the plan including fallback plans.

He really is not trying to hide himself. He is not picking them up in a van, he is just uses the normal low level spell. He sees them, messes with the brain and then, when he sees it is safe, he grabs hold and just disappears with the battery. He uses an almost expended old battery for the power to do that. Expended, that one died but we came across one still alive.

I was able to magically charge it enough to have it start walking in a direction. We stayed with it and made sure that it did not get run over. After a short time and another recharge, we started to get a rotting smell coming from a very large home. This is an area that each house sat on at least ten acres

It turns out that the leach had moved into a plush neighborhood that had only a few refugees but he had not touched them. You do not pee in your own pool. I had our people go to those homes and hard the refugees leave the area.

Now we have the man. He needed his batteries and he used up one to gather another so he must not be able to be separated that long from them. That makes it simpler. In his old world, since everyone had magic abilities, moving around was no big deal. Here, magic has not developed to that stage so he needs to stay close to the batteries.

That works to our advantage. Time to bring it to him.

The leach has an inflated ego. He will win each and every time. There is no one that can best him in battle. He is the great mage. He can use the four elements, only at full power. That is why he needs his batteries.

When the first shot that I fired hit his house, the pompous bastard has the balls to yell out, “Who dares challenge me on this world? You don’t even qualify to wipe my ass let alone challenge my greatness.” He fires a volley of the four elements.

I find something that even my old self did not see. If the man would put all that energy into one element at a time, he truly would be impossible to stop. I see that his batteries are all in the ground floor in a room that we can see them.

This is our opening. I give the order to wipe out that room. “Remember that they are doomed to death. This is a mercy for them and their families. One shot one kill. I will keep the leach occupied.

That whole floor is now full of holes. The batteries are falling both from the leach firing at us and our killing them off. Unless he has more, he is going to run out fast. I really need him to be worried about me rather than trying the power with one element.

We have the advantage of my future self. He is the reason that the old me was dying. He had started to try to take me over but I fought and was able to invade his mind and find out about his weakness, we are really not compatible . Because of our not using magic until recently, we were almost of no use. Being the only one that he could use, he tried very hard to invade my mind but I was able to block him out and defeat him.

I am now almost taunting him. Like a matador in a bull fight, I watched him and sidestepped where the blast was going to hit. Too bad there was no crowd that could shout Olé! I did that in my mind anyways.

I could see some madness creeping into him but also some weakening of his power. Between the shots he looked like he was trying to capture someone, anyone to get power from. He must know he is getting low.

He was startled when he found that we were not his people. He tries to search out mentally for any of the refugees in this area but cannot find any active minds. This scares him. How are there so many on the field but not a single mind that he can recharge from once these are used up?

Now fighting in desperation as his reserves dwindle, he needed to do a desperate move. He drew in all the remaining batteries power and aimed it at me. All the elements at once burst out of him He laughed as I was enveloped in death blows.

Now in almost desperation, totally depleted, he tries to take over anything that had spiritual power. Only finding the small wild life cowering in their warrens. He is in total fear because I now am emerging from the still fiery ball that was bent to be my crematory.

I brush off the dirt and ash from my now bare shoulders. I face him and say, “Those were clothes that my Charrel picked out for me. They were special.” I walk up to him grab him by his shirt and lift him off his feet.

“You are not going to like what I am going to do. All those people you killed. Used as nothing but batteries, a quick death is unfair to them.” I open the rift for the last time. “Your old world will run out of magic in a month, your time. Most of the evil ones there have been locked up. They all have been reduced to shells. No batteries there.”

I throw him through the rift and permanently seal it. That world can never be accessed again by anyone other than the gods.

With the danger subsiding and this worlds people are accepting the refugees as friends and neighbors. Things are quieting down unlike my future memories. We can breathe. Now I can ask for the last request from the future me.

“Charrel, my wife, now that this is done I have one last thing that the future me sent back to me. You are a nymph and immortal. You can shape shift. You need to shift into a wolf, bite my arm and inject your essence into me. I will become a shifter like you and will become immortal. We will have forever together.”

I hold out my arm. She is in shock. “I don’t want to hurt you. What do I do?”

I take out my knife and draw blood. “Put your essence in me and then heal the wound.”

She is still hesitant so I take her hand and place it in the wound. “Either put your essence in the wound or just heal it. Your choice.”

Her fear of losing him in the future due to age overcomes the anxiety of hurting him. Her finger morphs into a syringe and she drives it into his bone. She then injects him with her essence.

“There, my love. It is done. I will never lose you. We will live for eternity together.”

We melt together into a silver pool. We truly were one. Not bound by the restrictions of the water bag called skin. There are no words to describe it other than we were now one.

It took quite a few days for me to master reforming to what ever age I wanted to appear as. Charrel did tell me that she love both of my selves so I am now as I was when she came to my young me but with the long slightly graying hair of the old future me.

Anything to make my wife happy.

Authors note:

AI, with the right control, is an asset. Those ones that can take your word description and make any stile graphics are what I use. I will describe a character I am writing about and the program will generate a picture. Sometimes it takes quite a few attempts to get the one that I want.

Charrel was one that did not meet the peoson I was writing about but she captivated me. I saved her knowing that I needed to tell her story. Looking at her many times over a long period of time, this story just evolved.

I do have a few more of those saved. Their stories need to be told but first, they need to talk to me.
