The first journey
Again the gods of all and the Watcher are here but this time, they are in my renovated home. They love it. The Watcher had a sympathetic smile when she walked the cemetery. There were children buried there.
She put her hand on each stone and smiled. One, however, she touched the stone, looked at me and touched my arm as we left the grounds. “You did right by restoring that grave yard to the proper place it should be.”
I, to this day, never asked about that scene with her. “Guidelines are what I need from you. I do not know what instructions the other two asked for, if they even asked. I respect the chain of command, being in the Navy. You are my superiors. I do not want to step on any of the others toes. What I need is, what do you see this role as?”
I sit back and see that I may indeed be the first to ask. With all those old things in the inventory, the reception that I was told of the gifts to the goblin worlds, neither of my predecessors asked. They just stored.
I break the silence again. “What I want is to see what is out there with those two positions in mind. I do not want to store this stuff and hold it for the next person. I have been told by Jacob and Vannessa that what I gave them that went directly to those worlds the goblins have set up were a big hit. The money was also appreciated. Think of what they could have done with those things if they had not sat in my inventory for a hundred years.”
The male god of all tells me. “Neither of your predecessors have ever asked that question. I would have to say, look around. It is obvious that they found some pretty dangerous things but also many more helpful things. It is just they did not have the disposition system.
The female god of all tells me that for now, my computer has been updated as well as the glasses. On the computer, there is an app that will alert them separately or together when you need them. We also will ask the Junkman to get you a nonmagical door. That way, you will be able to go to them or have them come to you.” The Watcher says that she has found out about all that farm equipment you gave them. They would like you to visit. All three sites will put their location into the controls. “I do ask that you look at the places that you visit for how they treat the children.” She touches me then says, “You now have the ability to just call out for me if you find children in trouble.”
She does tell me that I really need to use the wife app. I tell her that I need to make a few trips first. “Who knows, I may just find someone out there like you.” That look can kill. I know. A very weak attempt at flattery. I’m not good at that. “Sorry but I really want to see what and who is out there rather than create something and hope I fall in love with it.”
I can tell that she is no longer the mad woman she was when we first met. They tell me that I can purchase things that are openly sold. I am to look, listen and read. “Use that ability that you learned from your grandfather.” The Watcher says, “The children on those worlds he left toys for those poor did warm my heart. He has this years in that pocket dimension bag. Look at some. I bet that you can come up with more ideas.”
“Can I use my money to buy out some of the toys here that would not violate what level they are at. Checkers, board games, puzzles and such. I really could buy out the store leftovers. Better yet, I need to talk with the lawyer. Maybe I can buy a toy store and wholesale the items here also.”
Again they smile and vanish.
I meet with the lawyer and we do setup such a store in a vacant mall store. Now it’s time. I am ready for my first venture in the capsule. I know that my two ancestors did it all the time but I need to say that this must be the feeling of standing in the door of a perfectly fine aircraft and know that you are going to trust a piece of cloth that someone else assured you that it will be okay. It is the fear that the packer had a bad parachute.
I stand in the capsule. I make sure that I have my bag with me. It, along with everything else, has the journal with all the worlds coordinates that the two have been to. Cain goes over the capsule controls with me. He stresses the emergency return button. I make sure that I have this rooms coordinates. Then I notice a plate affixed at eye level. On it is the word home and the settings. The parachute is packed right. With the instructions and the coordinates Jacob gave me. I am a little apprehensive as I close the door and push start. There is a distinct hum to the machine. In an instant, I am on another world but now there are multitudes of goblins running over to my capsule. I open the door and they are on their knees. Their leader comes over to me, bows and welcomes me. “It has been a very long time since we have heard the hum. It is only described in our history books. We welcome you jumper.”
Jumper, oh yes. that is what my grandfather said that his grandfather’s wife was called. “Please rise, all of you. My name is Able. I am just a searcher. You may know of me by Jacob and Vannessa. I was the one with all those boxes and farm equipment. My ancestor had a wife who was what you call “a jumper.” He had her explain how she was able to jump and when she went to the final life, he made this machine to find her. I have been told that I am never to disclose the workings.” They all now recognize my name and situation.
“You are a descendent so we still will call you a jumper. You can be nothing else because of what you have done for us with your gifts of those physical things and the money you provided.”
I stick out my hand and we shake. I now am being swarmed, in a nice way, with people thanking me but they all scatter and pull me away. I look and comment, “What did you do? A tractor should not be able to go that fast.”
They laugh and tell me that when the researchers of their race get something like those, they do have a need for speed.
I know of a lot of the things in the inventory of the bag. Mostly of the odd things. I have seen an old woman having a hard time walking. She has a few people helping her. Walking over to her I say, “Mother, may I give you something that will make your life a little better?”
I tap the bags inventory and there in front of us is an electric wheel chair. I have her sit and I explain the function. We have attracted the tractor people. She tries and has tears in her eyes and thanks me.
The researchers are looking it over and I get an idea. “If you were to modify this to have treads instead of wheels, she could go anywhere instead of just on paths.” I tell them that it is electric and will need to be recharged. I was told that they will bring over a charger for her. The woman is having a ball just using the joy stick. She is not in pain and not having to rely on others for support.
The researchers tell me that when she goes to bed, they will take the chair and make diagrams of each part. That way they can make as many as needed. She will have it back before she wakes. I’m assured of that.
“One thing, If a person can walk with minor discomfort, make sure that they try to walk some in their homes. They would lose the ability to walk is they use this exclusively.”
The healers in the crowd thank me for this but tell the crowd that I am right. Walk whenever you can. Use this for those longer ventures. I take the woman’s hand from the joystick and kiss it. Turn and walk away to talk with the leaders. I do notice that they now have people guarding my capsule. The leader tells me that it is so the children do not try to go in. Children are children anywhere you go. This being my first trip, I ask them if I could sit with their council. I am granted that. “I wanted to talk with you. This is my first time using the device my ancestor made. The two previous people were my third great grandfather and grandfather. They both traveled and picked up things but they just stored most. Recently I had Jacob and Vannessa come and take most. I have been given guidelines by the gods of what I can and cannot distribute. Most of what you will get Is through the Junkman. I do ask you if there is anything that I should be looking out for that you would like?” They did not even hesitate. “We ask you to watch out for worlds that the slave trade exists. Our main reason for being free is because of the first. The first was a jumper. When she went to the final life, her mate passed the watch to another. She set up this world and freed our ancestors. She set us up so we could defend ourselves. We free any slave regardless of race.
Please let us know if you find any slaves.”
That I can do, I tell them. I was shown their space fleet and the mouse folk fighters. I am truly impressed. I can see, without them saying anything that they take pride in the fact that no one has breached their space.
They do trade that protection for items they need but only with those worlds that do not have the slave trade. Now I get an idea but that can wait until morning. I have been invited to a feast in my honor and they want me to stay overnight. It was a wonderful meal. Very lively with tales of their exploits of being able to swarm a slave world and rescue all with one global strike. The party wound down and I was shown to a guest house. Time to do what I wanted to do. Writing down why I was doing what I was doing. In the predawn hours, I went to my capsule and went home.
In the morning, on the goblin world, they came to wake me. Instead they found my note on quite a large stack of gold and silver bars I left them. The note read, “My ancestors started a practice of just leaving things that people needed in the middle of the night. I chose you wonderful people to be my first. These bars should be melted down into the coin weight that other worlds use. When you find things on other worlds you feel that you need, you can buy them. Protection is a wonderful thing but stimulating a worlds economy also makes good neighbors. I will be back. Able” I am now back in my hide and Cain is very much relieved. Now that I have had my first jump, I want to go to my home and write about it while it is still fresh in my mind.
