CHAPTER 20 - HIS HANDS HER DOUBTS

The air was thick with tension. Every breath Meera took felt heavy, weighed down by the secrets she now carried in her chest. Aarav’s touch still burned against her skin, a mark of his possession, of a love that both terrified and consumed her. But there was something else, something gnawing at her heart—the doubts. They were growing louder, clawing at her from the inside. No matter how much she tried to suppress them, they surged to the surface, refusing to be ignored.

It had been days since the midnight confession. Days since Aarav had opened up to her, revealing the darkness he had been hiding. Yet even with the weight of those revelations hanging between them, Meera couldn’t escape the lingering feeling that something was off. His words, his actions—they didn’t match. He told her he loved her, that he needed her, but then why did he keep pushing her away? Why did he keep disappearing into the shadows when she needed him most?

And those mysterious, dangerous people he spoke of—were they just a product of his guilt and fear, or was there a deeper truth hidden beneath the surface? The more she thought about it, the more questions she had. Aarav had pulled her into his world, a world filled with lies, betrayal, and darkness. But in this twisted, chaotic web, she couldn’t help but feel trapped. Trapped by her love for him. Trapped by the fear of what might happen if she ever let go. It was late when she finally found herself standing at his doorstep again, her heart in her throat. She hadn’t wanted to come. She had promised herself she would take a step back, give him the space he needed. But those damn doubts, they were too much to bear. She needed answers. And she needed to know if the love he claimed to feel for her was enough to fight against whatever demons haunted him. Aarav opened the door before she could knock, as if he had been waiting for her. His eyes darkened when they met hers, the weight of unsaid words hanging between them like an invisible barrier. He stepped aside, gesturing for her to enter, but she hesitated, her doubts bubbling to the surface. “Meera,” he said softly, his voice heavy with something she couldn’t quite place. His hands reached for her, but she recoiled, the warmth of his touch now a source of confusion. His touch had once been a comfort, a reminder that she was his, that they were a team. But now, it felt like a chain, pulling her further into a world she didn’t understand.

“Aarav,” she began, her voice shaky but firm, “I need to know what’s going on. What’s really happening? Why can’t you just be honest with me? Why do you keep hiding things from me?” His eyes flickered with something— guilt, fear, anger—but he quickly masked it, his expression becoming unreadable. “Meera,” he said, his voice low, “You don’t understand. I’m trying to protect you.”

She stepped back, shaking her head, her breath catching in her throat. “Protect me?” she whispered, incredulous. “Protect me from what, Aarav? From you? From the truth? You’ve already brought me into this world, a world of lies, of betrayal, of darkness. I’m already here. You can’t protect me anymore.”

Aarav’s jaw tightened, and for a moment, there was nothing but silence. The kind of silence that filled the room with an overwhelming sense of dread. Meera could feel her pulse quicken, her hands trembling as she fought to keep her composure. But the more he stood there, the more she realized that she was the one in danger. Not from the people he spoke of, but from him. From his lies, his secrets. And from the part of him that was slipping further and further away from her. He moved closer, his steps slow, deliberate, as though he were trying to close the distance between them. But Meera didn’t move. She stood her ground, even as every instinct in her body screamed at her to run. She didn’t know if she could trust him anymore. She didn’t know if she could ever feel safe in his arms again. “Aarav, you’ve been lying to me,” she said, her voice a mixture of hurt and frustration. “You keep saying that you love me, but if that’s true, why are you pushing me away? Why do you keep disappearing? Why won’t you tell me the whole truth?”

His hands were suddenly on her again, gripping her arms with a force that left her breathless. “Meera,” he growled, his voice dark and desperate, “I’ve told you everything I can. The truth isn’t something you want to hear. And you’re not ready for it. You don’t know what you’re asking for. You don’t know what you’d be getting yourself into.” She flinched at his touch, but he didn’t let go. His grip tightened, his fingers digging into her skin as if he were trying to hold her in place, trying to keep her from running. But she was already slipping away. His words, his actions—they didn’t match. The man she had fallen for, the man who had promised her everything, was now someone she couldn’t even recognize. And no matter how much she wanted to believe in him, no matter how much she wanted to trust him, her doubts were starting to suffocate her. “You’re wrong, Aarav,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “I don’t need you to protect me. I need you to be honest with me. I need you to be real. I need to know who you really are.” He stared at her, his eyes burning with a mixture of anger and something else— something deeper, darker. “You want to know who I really am?” he asked, his voice low and dangerous. “Fine. I’ll tell you.”

Aarav’s hands slowly released her, but the damage had already been done. He had her in his grasp, not physically, but emotionally. She could feel herself falling, slipping further into the abyss that he had created.

“I’m not the man you think I am, Meera,” he said, his words cutting through the silence like a blade. “I’ve done things. Things I can never take back. People I’ve hurt. People I’ve betrayed. I’ve been living in this lie, this mask, pretending to be someone I’m not. And I can’t keep pretending anymore. But I can’t lose you either.” The words hit her like a ton of bricks. The weight of everything he had just confessed—the depth of the lies, the betrayals, the danger—pressed down on her like a crushing force. She felt dizzy, overwhelmed. Her mind couldn’t keep up with the chaos swirling inside her. “You’re lying again,” Meera said, her voice breaking as the tears threatened to spill over. “You’re pushing me away with your lies, Aarav. And I can’t take it anymore. I can’t keep living in this world of confusion and doubt. You say you love me, but your actions are telling me something else.”

For the first time, she saw it. The vulnerability in his eyes. The fear. It was fleeting, but it was there. And in that moment, Meera realized something: she wasn’t the only one trapped in this twisted game. Aarav was too. “I’m sorry,” Aarav whispered, his voice barely audible. “But I don’t know how to fix this. I don’t know how to make things right. I’ve ruined everything.” The words hung in the air, suffocating both of them. Meera could feel her heart breaking, piece by piece, as the truth settled in. The truth she had been trying to ignore. The man she loved—the man she thought she knew—was broken. And now, so was she.

But even as the doubts swirled in her mind, even as her heart screamed at her to run, she couldn’t. She was addicted to him, to the chaos he brought into her life. The intensity, the passion, the danger—it was like a drug she couldn’t quit, even if it meant losing herself in the process.

“Tell me, Aarav,” she whispered, her voice trembling, “Is there any part of you left that’s real? Or have I fallen for a lie?”

His eyes met hers, dark and full of torment. “I don’t know anymore, Meera. But I’m not ready to let you go. Not yet.”

And in that moment, the world shifted. The doubts, the lies, the secrets—they didn’t matter anymore. All that mattered was the twisted, undeniable connection between them. And no matter how much it hurt, no matter how dangerous it became, she couldn’t pull away. Not now.
