CHAPTER 14 – HAUNTED HUGS

The moonlight slashed through the curtains, casting long, jagged shadows across the cold, empty room. Meera stood by the window, her back to the chaos of the world outside, staring at the dark streets below. The echoes of that gunshot still reverberated in her ears, and no matter how much she tried to shake them off, the sound of it would never leave her.

Aarav was gone.

Gone.

And now, she was left with the aftermath — the silence that had consumed everything. The walls of her mind, the walls of the mansion, they all felt like they were closing in on her. The adrenaline that had coursed through her veins only hours ago was now replaced by an overwhelming emptiness, a hollowness that felt deeper than the abyss.

The warmth of Aarav's touch seemed like a distant memory, one that slipped away with every second, until there was nothing but the bitter taste of loss left in her mouth.

Suddenly, the door creaked behind her. Her breath hitched in her throat. She didn’t need to turn around to know who it was. The heavy, familiar presence filled the room like a storm. A shiver ran down her spine.

“Aarav?” she whispered hoarsely, her voice trembling. Her eyes stung with the threat of tears, but she refused to let them fall.

The footsteps were quiet, slow, deliberate. He hadn’t spoken yet, but she could feel the tension between them like a thousand volts of electricity. Every inch of her body screamed for her to turn, to reach out, to make sure he was real. But the truth was too suffocating. What if he wasn’t? Then, the silence broke. “I told you I’d come back,” came the gravelly voice from behind her.

Meera spun around, and there he was — Aarav. Standing in the doorway, his body bloodied, his face bruised and torn, yet somehow alive. Alive. His eyes locked with hers, dark and filled with an intensity that pierced through the layers of pain between them. Her heart slammed against her chest, her breath ragged as she stumbled toward him. Aarav was alive. He was standing right there. But the relief she felt was fleeting, overshadowed by the chaos that had followed him. She reached him in an instant, her arms wrapping around him before her mind could catch up. The familiar warmth of his skin, the weight of his body pressed against hers—it was like drowning and breathing at the same time. “I was so scared,” Meera whispered against his chest, her voice barely audible, as if saying it louder would make the fear realer.

But Aarav’s hand moved gently to the back of her head, pressing her closer to him, the bruised remnants of his touch still sending shivers through her skin. “I’m sorry,” he murmured, his voice rough and low. “I’m sorry I put you through this, Meera. I never wanted you to see this side of me. I never wanted you to feel this pain.”

She pulled back slightly, her hands cupping his face, as if she could ground herself in the warmth of him. The sharpness of his gaze melted her even more, leaving her speechless, her heart in a tangled mess of emotions she couldn’t begin to untangle. “Aarav…” Her voice broke. “Why? Why did you do this to yourself? To us?”

His jaw tightened, his lips pressing into a thin line. “Because there’s no escaping the past, Meera. It’ll follow you. And when it does, there’s no way out. I dragged you into my darkness, and I’m sorry.” His breath hitched, and for a moment, she saw the vulnerability she’d never noticed before — the cracks in his armor.

Her heart wrenched for him, but the weight of his words held her back. The darkness…

“I never wanted to be your burden,” Aarav continued, his voice thick with emotion. “But I was. And now you’re caught in it too. I can’t promise you anything, Meera. Not after what I’ve done.”

“Stop,” she interrupted, her hands gripping his arms tightly, her eyes locked on his. “You don’t get to decide that. You don’t get to make that choice. We do. I choose this… I choose you.” The words hung in the air between them, raw, desperate, and real. She felt the tremor of his heartbeat beneath her palm. He was alive, but he was broken in ways that she couldn’t yet understand.

Aarav closed his eyes for a moment, his breath shaky, and when he opened them again, the vulnerability in his gaze was gone, replaced by something darker — something dangerous.

“You don’t know what you’re getting yourself into,” he whispered. “I’m dangerous. If you stay close to me, you’ll get hurt. I can’t protect you.” Meera shook her head, pressing her forehead against his. “I’m already in it, Aarav. There’s no going back.” His hands slid down her back, his touch a ghost of the man he used to be. “But I don’t want to drag you into my world of darkness, Meera. You’re too good for this. Too pure.”

Her heart shattered at his words. Pure? She was far from it now. She had already crossed the line — the line that separated innocence from the raw, untamed world she was now part of. The world where betrayal lingered like a shadow and danger wrapped itself around every corner.

“You don’t get to tell me what’s good for me,” she said, her voice steady but laced with an intensity that mirrored his own. “You don’t get to decide what I can handle. I’m not leaving you.” Aarav’s eyes flashed with something sharp and dark — a warning, a plea, or maybe both. But it didn’t matter. Meera knew, deep down, that her decision had already been made. There was no turning back now.

Before he could say anything more, she kissed him — hard, fierce, desperate. A kiss that spoke of everything they couldn’t say with words. A kiss that threatened to burn them both alive with its intensity.

When they finally broke apart, their breath ragged, Meera could see the conflict in his eyes. But this time, she wasn’t afraid. She wasn’t afraid of the darkness that clung to him, nor the secrets that might tear them apart. She had already given herself to it. To him.

And there was no turning back
