This is from that one of the gold books on the special shelf I mentioned. I begin with this one because it is one of my favorites. I usually read it right after I have someone try to enter the attic. It is my hope that they will also one day come out of the room and be gold.
A notorious noble who defied the gods
There was a noble who was totally self centered. He lived in a kingdom that was rules by a tyrant king who was killing any mage, regardless of age, who could threaten him. One day that king issued an order that all nobles and their armies were to fall in with the king’s army.
That king had greedy eyes on the neighboring country.
The country of Martinetti was very prosperous and that wealth was his. The only reason he went on the campaign was the fact that he did not trust anyone. Those generals and nobles were going to steal his spoils, his riches.
There was only one noble along with the king’s family that stayed behind. The king was informed that the noble was taken to his deathbed. Sick and could not ride.
All that went with the king never returned. That country sent a message back to the king’s family that all were dead. “Never set foot in Martinetti again.”
Suddenly, a miracle happened. The noble arose from his death bed. He was cured. He had always had a low opinion of his pauper population. Farmers would griped when he sent his army to collect the taxes i.e. his ninety percent of the harvests.
Now, he considered himself king of his own nation. His people were starving.
Months after the king’s demise, there was a disruption in his realm. There were two people from the other country, helping his subjects. They were providing food and medical aid to them.
He gathered his guards and found the two. The pompous ass strode up to the two and demanded that they stop undermining his rule. He was disgusted when his guards ran off yelling that these were the guard shrinkers.
He stood his ground and demanded that they leave immediately. The people that they were helping looked like they were going to kill him then and there but the male of the two told the crowd that the noble was just too stressed and needed a vacation.
He called for someone called the Watcher. A young woman came there and that male explained that the noble needed a vacation. The noble was listing off all the things he was demanding to be provided for his vacation.
The woman was only counting.
He demanded to know what was the meaning of her counting. She calmly told him that she was calculating how long of a vacation he needed. He demanded that he needed a month.
Suddenly he was on another world and was both angry but trepidation was creeping in. He demanded to know what was happening.
The view was of total destruction. Anyone could tell at a glance that this was a dead world. Not a single trace of plant life. No birds, no animals, nothing living. There was what could be called a stream but it made an open sewer look like a crystal clear fountain.
He was totally aghast when she got a very cold look on her face. She told him that this was the world that he created. A world of the dead. She told him that he was now immortal but he would thirst and feel hunger. He was totally alone. He could roam anywhere he wanted but never will find a single blade of grass. Never find even a bug. Never will it rain.
Then she left.
He knew that she will come back. He was too important of a person.
Day after day, he waited. Weeks turned into months. They turned into years. No matter how much he tried to keep his sanity, it was a losing battle. No one to talk to, always thirsty and hungry. This wore on his mind. He never knew the point that he lost himself but lose himself he did.
Running, running, screaming guttural noises. He was lost. He had even lost words. He lost everything.
Thirty years had passed but he no longer knew time. This world had no night only dim day light. Dusk or dawn, it no longer meant anything to him. There was only one thing that happened. A light appeared.
He could now see an opening. He saw life in the form of trees and grass. He ran towards it and disappeared into the green.
He never would realize, he being just mindless naked flesh, that only thirty minutes had elapsed between the time he left and the time that door opened. He was allowed to run in the woods for a few days then the god of Mercy took him to her realm. She removed and healed his soul.
He was told that he was going to receive a second chance at life. He was to live a quiet life on a world that was going to be, one day in turmoil. He was going to help his neighbors, his community.
Then he experienced darkness with a strange feeling. He felt very warm. He could hear a very soft voice talking to him. It was a loving voice that he never heard in his entire life.
Yes, he remembered all of that past life. He remembered that he was a bastard. He remembered all the people he hurt. Finally he remembered the thirty years. That comforting voice would sing to him. Talk with him. For the first time he now feels true love.
One day, he felt a pushing. He panicked when he thought he was going back to that dead world. He was crying especially when he was in the brightest light he could remember and he was no longer warm.
Then it happened. He was washed and wrapped in a warm blanket. He was placed in the arms of a woman. He was still crying when he recognized a familiar voice. It was that female voice, that love.
He immediately stopped crying and could not take his eyes off her. She looked tired but that face shown nothing but love. A man was led into the room and he picked him up. His face also showed total, unconditional love but something more. Pride.
He heard the man as he spoke to the room while looking at me with those eyes. The man said that my name was Silas Smith and proclaimed that my name would live on forever as a great man.
Silas always was the type that would help. Sometimes, as a child, he would help but things would happen. His parents knew that he was something special, but.
When he needed to be scolded they would, praise when deserved. Silas learned that he was far better off now than when he was a noble. He now vows to himself that he would learn from that time but also he would make it a point to make sure that he would make it to that final life so he could apologize to each and every one of his old subjects. He wanted to make sure that they knew that because of them, he was able to change peoples lives to the good.
There came a time that a corporation from a different country came in to his town and started to change the town, in a good way. There was trouble though. The owner of the manufacturing plant in the town, never told the workers, let alone the town that he sold the plant to a corporation.
The owner of the corporation came to look at the plant. He was treated badly by a local family member who thought that a woman was his. She was rescued from a sinkhole by that man and had fallen in love with that corporate man.
That man tried to kidnap the two but was foiled by the corporate owner. The man went insane and thought that they were demons. He was carted off to the asylum.
His family members planted a bomb in that corporation’s new local office. They killed all inside including a well loved couple. The representative of the corporation and his assistant. They were newlyweds.
That corporation owners mansion was attacked in that other country by that crazy man’s relatives. Those who attacked were all killed.
The corporation owner came and gathered all that family together and talked with them. Then he came to the town and explained what had happened and then he turned to walk back to the hotel.
It was never known how Silas Smith was able to do it. Even he did not know but he sensed that this was his time to atone. This man had brought so much life to this dying town. All he knew was that he had to leap.
The bullet hit him in the head and he was dead instantly.
When he woke, he knew that he was dead. There was his name on a grave stone. In front of him was the two from his first world. They could not see him but they were with the one that he saved. He was happy to see that one alive.
The male of the two from his home world spoke these words.
“Silas Smith, listen to what I have to pronounce. We faced you on our world and your actions caused great pains and sorrow. The gods seemed fit to give you another chance. With what you did here on this world, sacrificing your life to save someone, I hereby acknowledge your heroism and valor. It will be made known of your redemption and made an example to all that even evil can change itself to do great deeds.”
They bowed but that was the last thing he saw. Again, for the second time in both lives, he saw a door open. This time it was both of his parents from this world. They told him that it was time to come home. They were proud of him but not as proud as all those he hurt in that other life.
I close his book but not before I look at the last page. There is a smiling picture of him surrounded by a lot of people. His dates only reflect his time as Silas Smith. That noble is never mentioned on the last page.
That book is again on the special shelf.
