They are my family

We have started to be a children’s refuge. You know, I really do not mind one bit. I shutter to think what my mind would be like if my relatives had accepted my offer. I realize now that they were greedy self centered bastards.

These children have become comfortable here but they are also very cautious. Trying to survive causes them to be alert. We adults are the same. We go into an alert when there is an indication of something not right.

The road to our home is now no longer hidden. The gangs that we have repelled, singles looking for just some extra food that we could spare and such have trampled the road beyond concealment. We have had parents come much to the delight of a child but the request is always the same.

“Would you please keep caring for our child? We are constantly fleeing and the child looks well cared for.”

Still there is fighting going on. Of course the child will stay, we now are family. Not until we personally see that the fighting has stopped, would we let one of our children go.

We all work here. Just because we have stores in the basement does not mean that we don’t farm or hunt. I had bought enough seeds to carry us each year with ample vegetables for five years. There is still a lot of game so birds, deer and such give us plenty of meat. I do wish we had a river nearby. I miss fish.

The longer this goes on, the closer we have to watch the stores and the more we need to become reliant on farming and hunting. I have a lot of how to books. We now use the fat of our large animal kills to make a rustic version of soap.

The teens are now able to hunt along with us but we make sure that there is always two adults and three teens to defend the home. The radios say that there is still fighting but now it is away from us. We still need to be on guard.

It has been almost six months since this started, so it shocked me when we were told by the children that there were some angry men at the fence yelling for me by name. Much to my shock, there were two of my relatives but they had a bunch of what look like thugs with them.

I yell loud, “All children go to the lock down room. Sharon, go with them.”

I walk out knowing that the teens were in their hidden positions. Marie was behind me and Josh was also in his hidden position. We have rehearsed this many times. Everyone knew here that I had initially invited relatives but they called me foolish. Only after I had landed here did they call to demand that I pick them up.

“How did you find this place? I crushed my phone.”

One relative responded, “You did not check that chopper of yours. We had a devil of a time getting here. Had to kill a lot of people. Now open the gate and let us in.”

“We have no more room. I’m sorry but you have to leave.”

He is starting to show what he really is, self inflated. I have something that he feels is something he wants and he lets me know.

“I do not care. This is my place. I am more important than you and you left us to die, you ingrate. Since you are family, I will condescend to let you and those brats walk out alive.”

Now the posturing. They raise their weapons but the barrels are pointing up. Now I have mentally prepared for this possibility. I answer him, knowing what will be the inevitable outcome.

“I built this with my own fortune. This is a refuge for those children who needed to run from people like you that started this whole damned war. Greedy bastards that had to be at the top. Now that you are on the bottom, you come here and feel that you own me. Not happening.”

I am answered, “Because you are family, I’ll let you live. If I have to, I will kill everyone else including those brats squatting on my property eating my food.”

That pushed my button. “These are my family. I protect family!”

I pull the trigger. All my family fire.

Those at the gate never got a chance to pull a trigger. Never got a round off. They were dead before they knew it. Seven AK47’s emptied their drums on them in a matter of 20 seconds. It was a meat grinder.

I tell everyone to reload and cover me as I check on them. None are alive. As I call all clear, Josh yells that they are to drop back into their hidden positions. “Don and I need to check their vehicle. They did not walk here. If you hear firing, do not leave your posts.”

I tell Marie that she needs to update Sharon. We start to walk.

Finding their cars, they had almost nothing but a few cans of dog food. Strange thing is that they have a trunk with some gold and of all things e-coins. Really worthless unless a government is reformed on a gold basis. No ammo.

“We need to check those weapons. I get the feeling that they were bluffing.” I remark to Josh. We walk back, seeing no one else and now say that everyone is dead. We check the weapons and find that all they had were a few rounds each.

I am really upset. The others can see it on me and come over with words of consolation. Stopping them but in a friendly way, I wave my hands and say,

“I appreciate the sentiment but you are getting this whole thing wrong. The thugs, I don’t know and don’t care. The two claiming to be relatives were at one time but that was the past. The only family I have and will ever need is all of you. We protect family. Grab the weapons while I get the loader. We dump the lot in the same ravine that we always dump the worthless bodies of those who chose to pose a threat to us.”

Three trips and I look at the ravine that first had that car crash, it is now a mass of decomposed and decomposing idiots. The last dropped were those two. I continued my personal tradition. Once they dropped, I unzipped my fly and pissed on them.

“That is the only respect that all of you get.”

When it is finished I decide to erect a sign. I do and it reads,

“Challenge our family and end up here. Dead and pissed on.”

It is now time to take the fight to those who caused all of this. Time for the helicopter. By the way, I did find their tracking devise. Now I don’t care. Our children need protection.

Painted on the side and bottom of it is now “Children’s Sanctuary Protectors” in big bold letters.

Innocent people know of us now and we see usually a tip of the hat as we fly over them.

We now get messages dropped off at the ravine sign telling us of child slave labor owners. Messages like that receive our attention.
