Chapter 54
Returning from the convenience store, they had been able to procure only the basics. These corner stores were not known for stocking anything healthy, and any perishables had perished shortly after the apparent collapse of civilization. Ryan and Abby quietly entered through the shattered lobby door and made their way toward the room they had, in a way, reserved for themselves. The hallways were eerily quiet as they silently opened the door. Ryan noticed immediately that the wedge he had placed to hold the door shut was still intact, and surmised that no one had even been near the room.
The door opened without a sound as Ryan and Abby entered, carrying several plastic bags of food and other items. Setting them on the floor, Ryan made sure to close and lock the door. From there, the bags were emptied on the floor and the items organized. But first, they needed to wash and retreating into the bathroom, they emptied several bottles of water into the bath tub. It wasn’t nearly the amount they needed but it better than nothing. They would have to use it only for washing the necessary places and took the time to wash each other while giggling in excitement. Ten minutes later, they were as clean as need be. Deodorant soon followed. Having nothing else to wear, they dressed in the clothes they had worn since leaving Troy. Neither saw this as a pleasant experience, but one does what one can in times of crisis.
