Chapter 13
Leaving the road that led to the cul-de-sac, Ryan and Abigail walked cautiously through the woods and soon found themselves approaching another quiet street. Looking carefully out from the tree-line, Ryan searched in each direction, looking for both houses and people. Now, to his left, he saw a road leading right and, assuming it led to another group of houses, retreated back into the woods.
“We’re going over there, right?” Abigail asked. “Yeah,” Ryan replied. “But we should stay behind the trees until we know if there’s anyone there.”
Abigail was eager to find food and water, but in her fear of being discovered, she also knew the value of being concealed.
Having fallen back into the woods, they walked down within clear sight of the intersecting road and from behind a large tree, Ryan scanned the houses for any signs of movement. To his surprise, he discovered a station wagon parked in the driveway of one of the houses, midway down the road. Seeing that the house was likely inhabited, both knew that the odds of obtaining what they needed were better than where they had just come from. But, they also realized that the presence of people meant that there was a chance for a confrontation, and this was what they were trying to avoid. However, they were quickly becoming overwhelmed with hunger and thirst, leaving them with no choice but to take the risk and explore the house.
