Finally time
We now have been married for thirty years. It has actually now become a pain to have to change our appearance for the neighborhood. In our office we use the young appearance but on the street, we now appear as that old couple.
We both look at those two grave stones and the urn between them. I tell Susan that it is time for us to scatter the ashes and put those two stones to rest. She agrees but tells me that we need to get a cemetery plot and a stone. “The stone just needs their two names on it. We do not need and explanation to those workers but we bury the stones in that grave. I don’t want to see those stones in some dusty warehouse.”
We do that and agree that it is time for us to move in here completely.
Most of the neighborhood is new people. Even though we act the same, most now have things to do. Only the old ones like us still come over but those are few and far between.
After some mutual decisions, we make the announcement to those few. “We now just want to retire to a senior community. This street has been a joy to live on but it really has change. It’s time to go.”
The gathered, once was hundreds, are now less than ten and we are just on the rear deck. We all reminisce about the old times. A few gripes about the new residents but Susan says that it is their loss. “Numerous times we have invited them but they all have their things to do excuse. After a while, we took the hint so we stopped.”
Rod and his wife had long since retired. His adult children now run the business. Rod told me that they were leaving for a warmer climate. I thanked him for being a good friend and wished him a good retirement.
That was five years ago. We received word last year that he passed in his sleep. His wife shortly after passed.
It is time for us to let go of that life. Our office needs our full time focus now.
As per our usual style, we gave the house and its carefully screened contents to our favorite charity for their benefit. Our warehouse’s contents have been transferred to our now permanent residence.
By the way, it turns out that our residence is in a pocket dimension. That is why, when I was chosen as that sucker punched boy it was just a dimensionless void. We can change each room to whatever we want but I found that void room and will keep it for some of those wise guys in the guild.
I have found that they still like to play but the election of guild masters now is a formal proceeding in both the Adjudicator’s and Assassin’s guilds. I did come to an agreement that we both go to them. It helps with the stress.
Although the treat I received after that first time has been repeated often.
Each of us still take on solo tasks. I do find that Susan does like to take the rapists. She just says that their old horse needs to be put out to pasture but they always welcome a new one to ride.
I laugh because I had long since been told the tale of the first. That first is still with that house. He actually likes it there. His mind remembers nothing of his past life. They even take him for soft rides when they see that he needs it. The hard rides are now for the new stock.
Most of the Amazons that live there have their own favorite horse.
I to like the specials to solo but my favorite is when we go out together on the tough assignments.
We have the respect from all the guilds due to our fairness. We judge on just the facts, not the emotions even when they are heinous but those generally do not make it here. After all we adjudicators have assassin as our private persona.
Author’s note:
This one again started off as a dream I had. By now you must know that I do have weird dreams. I have looked at what I have written in the past and I still like listening to them being read back by my word program.
I am always chasing those squirrels. I have a number of stories I am working on but now I am limiting submissions to two a month,. I track the numbers of downloads and must acknowledge those who have downloaded my books, especially the core group.
There is a network web site that, even though they mainly have news, politics, they have weird stories. Their flavor of the month is about parallel universes. I have always thought about consequences of my actions.
One instance, I’m sure you have had them, where I ran across the main street, as a kid, and heard screeching of locked up tires. I always thought, since then, maybe I was hit in another universe, maybe I caused a terrible accident. Sounds like another story. Thanks.
