The Gods call
April was having the usual bad dreams. They were mostly of her time at the orphanage. The beatings she received from the matron. All because she did not have a score. Why didn’t her birth mother drown her at birth.
She has had luck on her side since she was bodily thrown out. She should have died but luck was the only one smiling at her. That didn’t negate all the bad things that kept showing up in her life.
April grabbed hold of that thought and hung on. The one thing that she wanted to do before she killed herself was to kill the matron. That is the reason she grew. That is the one reason she made sure she could defend herself. That is the only thing that drives her. She needs to put that woman through the hell she was put through.
If the matron hated her so much as to call her a demon but raise her to the age of ten. She had to be a sadist and needs to be destroyed. She was close. April will have her revenge in a day or two. She could even taste it.
The night of her twenty first birthday, April lay down in her bed roll. She was tired but, as usual, she really did not want to sleep. Sleep meant those dreams again. As with anyone, without knowing the moment it happens, she drifted off to sleep.
Instead of her usual dreams, April found herself in a white room. It was almost too bright. She looked around. There was nothing that she could see that would differentiate between walls, floor or ceiling, nothing but white.
There came a gray smoky mist that appeared. It coalesced and took the form of a human. She could not tell if it was a man or woman but it was human. Then it talked to her but in a gentle tone.
“April, it is time that you are to awaken and take your rightful position.”
“My rightful position? That’s a laugh. I’m a zero with only one position, kill that matron.”
“First of all, you will not kill the matron especially since you are not, what you call, a zero. The primitive device has not changed and also with their thinking.”
The entity produced a score measuring ball.
“Place your hand on this and see what they missed.”
Skeptical but she figures that this is the weirdest dream she has ever had. I’ll humor it. She places her hand on the ball. There is a sensation that would never happen in a dream. She feels almost a lightning bolt strike her body. Not in the way you would expect. It did not hurt her. For the first time in her life, she felt true comfort.
“Please let me stay here. Don’t let me wake up. I do not want to lose this feeling”
“Look at what the device is telling you.” In a soft tone.
The message read, April Monday, score 12,000 demigod of fools.
Before she could digest what she saw, the entity said.
“I am an ethereal, a god in your language. I am the god of fate. You were born to a world that is in great turmoil. They have become fixated on that score but have not improved on the device. The system was not originally designed to be worshiped like they do. A higher number just meant that you were destined to focus deeper on the task you chose. Actually, the lower numbers meant that you would be able to enjoy life more. Less stress.”
April interrupts,
“Then why the fuck did you allow me to be abused and cast out? Why such a rotten life? Why ruin my home? Why?”
She is now angry at the entity.
“Why, because you are the demigod of fools. You needed to experience what it was like to be considered a fool. A useless person. The meaning of fool is not someone that does foolish things. You are the demigod of those who have been wrongly treated like a fool, useless and a joke.”
She is now getting very irritated.
“So I am a demigod, what does that entail? I think that I want to wake up from this joke dream.”
“Go ahead, try.”
April tries to wake herself by thought. That did not work so she did the pinch, she hit herself and then she tried to run. No matter how fast she ran, she was still in the same place.
The entity came over and pulled her into a hug. She melted and cried. This was the very first time anyone had given her a hug. She was a zero, no one wanted to touch her. They gave her the look of, don’t touch me you may be catching.
That hug could have gone on for eternity. It already seemed like days.
“Have you calmed down, my daughter.”
“Thank you, that is my first time of any comfort.”
“It won’t be the last. My first gift to you is comfort. You will get comfort from rescuing your people that are depressed by their situation. Not the ones that are well off but have the ‘poor me’ syndrome. You will be able to give and receive comfort from those who are oppressed or in mourning for loss of ones they loved.”
She likes that but the entity goes on.
“You will rescue some of the outcasts from the fate of being ten and cast out to die. You will know, without meeting them, couples who desperately want a child any age but cannot have one. Your rescued will be paired up with those loving couples. There will be a number that you will raise their score. The effect it will have on you is that you will receive their initial score as a bonus. You can raise them to five thousand and their original score. These chosen will go on to further your mission.”
April was given many gifts, the power of speech that gave her a commanding voice. She was given instant teleportation. She could just think about a destination and she would be there. She could access the white room when she felt it was necessary to influence or warn someone. Many others were given.
The entity came to the last gift.
“As much as you want your revenge on that matron, killing her will not due. She is also destined for greatness but under your guidance. The last gift is servitude. You cast it on someone or some beast, it will be your servant. You control just what extent. From a compulsion to total non-thinking obedience. For the matron, you will appear in front of her as she is casting out another child. You will hold her with your will and make her see what your true score and rank is. Then you will cast servitude on her but to the point that she must obey but she can still think. She needs to see just what you experienced at her hands but also what comes from those they cast out. The child she is casting out will be your first and eventually be your replacement.”
Just before the entity returns April back to the world it tells her.
“You may have one fun thing on this first encounter. The matron is throwing the boy out with one of those old breads. Her first taste of what she dished out, make her eat that moldy bread.”
When April wakes, she is greeted with a sense of urgency. The boy is being thrown out now. She knows where that horrid building is. Without even thinking about it, she has jumped to that exact spot.
The matron is yelling at the boy with an almost rehearsed speech. She is berating him for being a sixty seven.
“Your worthless” she yells. “There was only one that was more worthless, that was a zero. Now get”
The matron did not get to finish that sentence when she saw that zero she threw out long ago.
“You’re that zero. What the hell are you doing back.”
That was all she could get out as April jumped to the boy and put herself between the boy and the matron.
“ON YOUR KNEES.”
April commanded the matron and the matron complied but not of her own free will.
In the command voice.
“I now am going to give you the ability to see my score and what it really means.”
Instantly she sees April Monday: score 12,000 demigod of fools.
It almost chokes her. The matron can’t believe what she sees but knows she must.
“You don’t deserve the title matron, not that it means anything, to anyone, other than the devil. I name you Gurtrude. That is a fitting name. I will prove to you what you just read.”
The boy is only shy of four feet tall, short red hair and unbearably thin.
She looks at the boy and kneels. She draws him in for a warm hug. He melts. After a while she asks even though she knows.
“May I ask, what is your name?”
“She named me July Wednesday but I call myself Stanley.”
“Forget that name. You are now and forever Stanley. Stanley, what is your score?”
He looks at the ground and tells her that it is sixty seven.
She looks at Gurtrude and then tells Stanley to show her his score, as she puts her hand on his head.
Gurtrude gasps as Stanley brings up his score. Even he is taken aback. Where is used to read sixty seven, it now reads five thousand sixty seven. There is now a title after it. Apprentice to the demigod of fools.
Stanley now is looking a April as she opens her screen and displays the title and that her score went up sixty seven points.
“That title means that you now are my trainee and my son. You will follow me and learn. With your score boost comes many gifts. For now, your gift of food is most important to you. You will never run out of food for the rest of your life. You can now feed every child that we find in need.
You will travel with me and we will rescue ones like us and find them homes. We will champion the so-called useless ones. The ones that are called fools. Now why don’t you try your food gift. Just think of what you want.”
He does and a very large platter of meat and eggs appear in his hands.
“Go over there on that rock and enjoy that meal. Can I have that loaf of bread she gave you?”
I go over to Gurtrude and cast servitude on her.
“Servitude means you must obey me. I wanted to kill you but the entity told me that you need to see the effect of what you caused. You can grumble all you want but you must obey any of my commands”
“Like hell I will.”
“Still defiant I see. Stand up.”
Gurtrude was trying to stop herself but found that she could not defy the command. She stood up.
“You thought this a fitting recompence for all you gave us. Eat the bread.”
Again, she was trying to stop herself but she took hold of the loaf and started to eat.
“This tastes like shit.” As she continued to eat.
“I know, but when it is the only food that you have, you eat. Look at Stanley. He is enjoying his meal. I bet it is the first real meal he has had in a long time, if ever. Like me and others, we knew what a good meal looked like. You ate that in front of us each day with great delight. Now he is rubbing your nose in it. You will travel with us and learn.”
I materialize her riding whip and hand it to her.
“Try to raise your hand against me.”
Gurtrude tries and immediately is frozen but in terrible pain.
“That is the pain we felt every time you raised it against us. Anytime you try to defy me, that is what you will experience until I say the word, release.”
With that, Gurtrude is released. I kneel down, grab her chin and with the most frightened look in Gurtrude’s face, I tell her.
“Don’t ever forget. I could leave you in that pain forever. I now know of whole planets that are burnt out. I could change you so you could live until time ended alone on a burnt out world but I do not think that will be necessary.”
I now know that she has just experienced her first real taste of what she doled out. Helpless to stop what she was experiencing. I needed that one step more.
“Stanley, I need you to come over here with us.”
He has finished his meal so he comes over.
“I’m going to show you two a special place. Ready to start your new life, my son?”
“Yes”
I think that this may be his best day of his ten years. In an instant, we have jumped to my white room.
