Book Description Report this book

Stevenson’s brooding historical romance demonstrates his most abiding theme—the elemental struggle between good and evil—as it unfolds against a hauntingly beautiful Scottish landscape, amid the fierce loyalties and violent enmities that characterized Scottish history. When two brothers attempt to split their loyalties between the warring factions of the 1745 Jacobite rising, one family finds itself tragically divided.

This for me is one of RL Stevenson’s best books. However, 'Treasure Island' and 'Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' are much better known. 'The Master of Ballantrae’ is more complex and rewarding I feel. The basic story is about two brothers set at the time of the Jacobite rebellion. One brother is a good man, and the other, the elder brother who becomes disinherited after the Jacobite wars is evil. The characterization is good and the plot is exciting. Although written in the late nineteenth century the book is easily readable and well worth a try.
