What is streaming media? In a nutshell, streaming media are multimedia (e.g., text, audio, and video) that are transmitted through various telecommunications channels (e.g., phone lines, radio signals, and the internet) to end users who, in turn, receives the media in a form which they can readily/instantly view, hear, or read. With streaming, people don't have to wait for the media to be transmitted fully or load completely before they can see, hear, or read it... portions of the transmitted media become viewable and audible the moment they are received by a telecommunications/multimedia-playback device (e.g., radio, television set, and computer).
