This is a collection of short stories based on real conversations with real young adult learners of English in South Korea from 2007 to 2010. It is best categorized as creative non-fiction. I imagined the unfolding life stories of these protagonists as they were related to me, and thought how their struggles with identity, negotiations with world English, and career decisions might play out.

Barbara Waldern

I've been a teacher of English as a foreign language living alone in South Korea since mid-2007. Besides teaching, I travel, volunteer, think and hike. I've been an activist all my life. I was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada where I spent almost all my life prior to my move to Korea. I was an ESL instructor, and a program and admin support person in government departments and educational institutions before I returned to studies and got a Master's degree in anthropology, after which point I was a tutor and researcher.
