What Happens at a Party
mori Wilson was your average high school graduate, talented, smart, and head strong, a go out and change the world type of person. At the age of seventeen with her birthday three months away and college four months out, Amori had decided that she was going to live it up while she could; besides there would always be time to buckle down when college came around. Amori and her two best friends Alexis, and Anise were heading over to a graduation pool party that was being held at Ryan’s house. When they arrived the three of them headed to the front door, Amori looked at her friends,
“I can’t believe that Ryan Morris would invite us to his grad party, when we were all in school it didn’t seem like he even knew we existed.”
Anise shook her head in agreement as they walked into the house,
“I know what you mean, I guess things do change.” Though glad to be there the three of them could not help but feel out of place. Heading outside their mouths dropped when they saw the size of Ryan’s pool, they had expected him to have a big house, but they never dreamed anyone could have such a big pool. While they stood there in shock they didn’t notice someone had walked up behind them, whispering in Amori’s ear, “That’s the smaller of my pools would you like to see the indoor pool?” Turning around Amori was stunned to see that it was Ryan, the coolest guy in like all of high school was actually talking to her, and she was mute from shock. Alexis had overheard the question and answered for Amori, “she would love to go.” Alexis gave Amori a light shove towards Ryan, snapping her out of her trance.
“Um, of course, I’d love to see it.” Ryan smiled taking her hand and guided her through the mass of teens, down a hallway then through two huge twin doors, when Amori walked in her mouth dropped; Ryan closed the doors behind them. When Ryan had said that the other pool was the smaller that was an understatement, it was way smaller than this pool, like the later didn’t even compare to the massiveness of this pool. Amori looked at Ryan there was no one else inside the room, “So are you going to let the others in?” Ryan smiled at her as he removed his shirt revealing rock hard abs, Amori began to blush. This was the first time she had ever been alone in a room with a boy, “No I wasn’t planning on that, only people I know that I can trust I let in.” Ryan began walking to the water. Then stopped turning around he looked at Amori, she was still contemplating whether to remove her swim cover or to leave the room. “I can understand if you would like to change into your swim suit in private, there’s a room over in that corner where you can change.”
Amori turned around; at least he knew she didn’t want to remove her cover in front of him. After she was done changing Amori walked out of the room, after seeing her exit the room Ryan beckoned her to join him. Ryan smiled at her, “So Amori now that you’ve finished high school what are you going to be doing now?”
“Uh, well I’m still trying to figure out which college I want to go to, since a lot of them have given me scholarships, but I know that whatever I do its going to be about journalism.”
“I can see you being a good journalist, your articles in the school paper were always interesting.” Amori couldn’t believe her ears, “You read my articles?”
“Well yeah, I mean weren’t they there to be read?”
“Well of course, but I never thought that you of all people would, well, read it.” Ryan looked at her eye to eye, he was now only a few inches from her face, “Trust me, you were the best writer we had in the newspaper, I mean the only one next to the comic strip that I would read.”
They were moving closer to each other with each word, “But why didn’t you ever tell me?”
Ryan stopped for a moment, “I mean if you liked my articles so much, why didn’t you ever tell me? Or was it because you were to cool to be caught talking to me?” Ryan knew where the conversation was headed off to now, he thought hard, he knew that she was right, he had wanted to talk to her ever since he read her first article, but if he did it might have ruined his rep. “I guess your right the popularity was more important to me tha…”
“Than being the only person next to my friends and the teachers, to tell me I actually did a good job, you know if back then you wanted to stay in the "in" circle then, why are you talking to me now? I mean even now you don’t want your friends to know you’re talking to me.”
“Amori I didn’t bring you in here to hide the fact that I’m talking to you, I did it so that we could talk without being interrupted.” Amori not knowing why in the world she was having a hard time believing that, she began to back away, towards the edge of the pool, how foolish she had been to ever believe that someone like him could actually like someone like her. Getting out of the pool Amori headed over to the room that she had changed in earlier.
But Ryan was hard on her heels, for him it was one moment it seemed like they understood each other and the next they were two totally different people. “Amori wait, Amori!” turning around Amori looked up at Ryan, she felt sick in the gut, Ryan stopped only inches away from her, “What do you want from me Ryan?! One moment I don’t exist, the next you’re acting like we’ve known each other forever? For all four years of us going to the same high school you never once at least said hi, and now you invite me to your pool party, take me to some secret place in your house, and then you act as if were BFF’s. Ryan right now I’m still trying to figure you out!” Amori looked long and hard into his eyes, this was the first time she had ever looked at his eyes this close before, now she noticed that they were ruby red, and seemed to glint and shine in the light, just as a real ruby would.
“Look Amori I’m sorry if I’m confusing you, the truth is I don’t even know why I fee… am doing this, I know I’ve been wanting a chance to talk to you, but, well,” Ryan thought for a moment, “your right I’m sorry, good luck with you journalism.”
“Thanks and you with what you’re going to be doing.” Ryan felt like he had been hit with a sledge hammer, as he watched the door close behind her, Ryan felt like part of his heart was closing to. There was something about being rejected by Amori that didn’t make him feel so great, putting his shirt back on Ryan walked out of the indoor pool area, and headed back to the main living space, the party didn’t seem that great any more, and somehow Amori had gotten him in the love at first sight. Though he doubted she felt the same way.
Amori stood inside of the room she had just finished changing in for quite some time, did she really just reject Ryan, and it felt so unreal. After leaving the pool area Amori went to find her friends, she saw Anise talking to Jillian, “Yeah Anise do you know were Alexis is, we really should be going now.” Anise looked at her watch then bolted out of her chair, “Last I saw her she was over by the pool.” The two of them hurried to find Alexis when they saw her she was on the dance floor, pulling her off Amori pointed to her watch, “We have to get home now we promised are parents that we’d be back by eleven it’s a quarter ‘till and it’s a twenty minute drive.” Realizing the time Alexis took the lead as they weaved their way through the crowd.
Turning around Ryan saw them leaving, it was like another blow, he thought that at least she would stay and enjoy the party. As they left Ryan watched them, this was not supposed to end like this, he thought to himself, I mean I wasn’t trying to insult her or anything, suddenly something caught his eye, focusing on the figure Ryan growled below his breath. Walking over, he followed the figure into a room, “Morgan what are you doing here?”
“Come now don’t get so hostile, I’m only here because I’ve been sent to get you. Are fathers are about to come to a peace agreement and they want their sons to be there for it.”
“Are kingdoms will never be able to strike up a real peace treaty, and you know it, why do they waste their time?”
“Don’t worry yourself this time they really did come up with a peace treaty, one that will work, and benefit all are people, but the human race well they get the brunt of the heat.”
“What do you mean the brunt, to them are kind is only fairytales and myths, we can’t punish them when they don’t even know we exist.”
“Never knew you were such a fan of humans, the son of Lord Dranga? When did you start caring what happens to them?” Ryan looked away; it wasn’t humans in particular that he cared about just one of them, “They tend to grow on you; do tell what’s the agreement?”
“Intermarriage, the two of us must choose and marry someone form the other kingdom.”
“WHAT! So tell me what this has to do with the humans?”
“Everything, the moment the two kingdoms unite there will be no more arguing and fighting over Loam, and who would get the most land, and we’d be even stronger with are kingdoms united.”
“We can’t just take their land, humans are living beings, we can’t just wipe them out because were the stronger.”
“You have gone soft, well no matter what you say our fathers have made up their minds, and you will return by dawn tomorrow or your bride shall be chosen for you.” After giving Ryan one last glance Morgan left the room. Picking up the closest thing to him, a glass cup, Ryan threw it at the wall, letting his anger subside before leaving the room.
To the Woods We Go
Saying good bye to Anise and Alexis, Amori closed the car door watching them drove away. Heading up to her room she closed the door then threw herself across her bed. Facedown she screamed into her pillow, lifting herself up she went to the bathroom, after taking a shower she checked her phone, seeing that there were two messages one from Alexis the other from Anis, Amori placed it on a conference call.
Hearing her phone ring Alexis picking it up she answered, “Hello.”
“Hey Lexis, you call… hold on Anise just picked up, Hey, yea, I have Lexis on the other end, I have my phone on conference, ok, Lexis you still there?”
“Yea, I’m here.”
“Ok I have Anise on the other end, she says she can hear you can you hear her?”
“Hello, Lexis can you hear me?”
“Yep load and clear.”
“Ok, you two called me earlier did you need something?”
“Well I want to know what happened between you and Ryan, I mean this is like the first time a guy has ever ever ever, asked to talk with you, not to mention invite you to his party.”
“I totally agree with Anise, come on girl spill the beans.”
“Nothing special happened all we did was talk.”
“That’s it you just talked?”
“Yea, he asked me what I wanted to do I told him I want to be a journalist and guess what he liked my articles, the ones that were in the school paper.”
“Wait he actually read your articles, and liked them? Wow seems to me he’s wanted to talk to you for awhile.”
“Anise really, if he wanted to talk to me all this time he should have while we were in school, I mean really, even now he didn’t want his friends to know he was talking to me.”
After the party Ryan began packing his stuff, it had been over five years since he had come to the realm Loam, and he wasn’t ready to leave yet, but it was he either he left, or his father would send someone to take him back. One way or the other he was going back.
After packing he turned the lights out in the house, went to his garage locking his backpack in he cranked his motorcycle. As he drove he thought back to his conversation with Amori, it had started off good, well at least he thought it had, “Might have went better if I had let her start the conversation.” Sighing he turned the corner, now his main concern was that he had to choose a bride from the kingdom of Mordran, for him there was no appeal in those women, they had pail skin, sharp fangs, and sunken eyes, the person that got the better end of the deal was really Morgan. Not only that, but it was going to seem really strange to everyone that he had left right after throwing the party. Ryan looked at the time, after pulling up next to the forest, he had twenty minutes left. Hearing a sound he turned to see a car pull up, why a car was here at six in the morning before the sun was up he didn’t know.
Amori saw the motorcycle and pulled up next to it, she always came here before dawn to hike, and clear her mind. Waving at the person on the motorcycle, she got her backpack out of the trunk, and then headed over to the path she always took and started hiking.
Ryan watched not saying a word, he didn’t want Amori to know it was him, but his curiosity got the better of him, getting off his motorcycle and taking his backpack, he jogged to catch up with Amori. When he was only a few feet from her he slowed down, touching her arm lightly.
She turned around backing away, realizing it was Ryan she smiled, and continued her hike.
“Um, so Amori do you always come here this early?” Ryan was trying to start up a conversation, he had no need to turn the other way, and since this path would cross with the one he was going to take shortly.
“Yea, when ever I get the chance.”
“Cool, so you like hiking, that’s good. Um, about last night,” Amori suddenly stopped turning around she looked at him, “What about last night?”
“Well, I’m sorry if it was my fault you left so early, I swear I wasn’t trying to make you mad.”
“It has nothing to do with that, I had told my mom that I’d be home by eleven.”
“Oh, so you’re not mad at me?” Amori turned around and continued her hike, not answering his question she said, “So why are you out here, that’s not exactly a hiking bag your holding.”
Ryan noticed she had avoided answering his question, but went along, “Um, that’s well, its not.”
A light breeze moved through the trees, Ryan stopped abruptly sniffing the air, turning around he growled at the figure behind him, “So this is why you’ve gone soft on the humans, amusing.”
Ryan felt Amori grab his arm, “Ryan what is he talking about?”
“Its nothing just stay behind me.” Ryan felt her grip tighten, as she pressed her body harder against him.
“So tell me were you planning on bringing her? I must say I don’t blame you for wanting her, she is most appealing.”
“Ryan what is he talking about? Were you taking me somewhere?”
“Amori don’t listen to him.”
“So that’s her name, Amori, Dryan you really know how to pick them.” Morgan moved forward, he looked it to her eyes; there was something more alluring about this human than any other he had ever seen.
Ryan noticed the way Morgan looked at Amori, if she had not held his arm he would have jumped Morgan.
“Leave her out of this.”
“I’m not the one that brought her in it, it was you. But don’t you worry she’ll be safe,” Morgan walked around them then paused, “for now.” Walking into the trees he vanished.
Amori was in a state of shock, she still had no clue what just happened. Ryan turned to her, “Amori you have to listen to me, ok, I don’t want you doing anything in this area any more. Don’t come here for nothing do you understand me?” He searched her eyes, they were still locked on were Morgan had stood only minutes ago. Ryan shook her lightly, cupping her face in his hands making her look at him in the eyes, “Promise me.” She looked at him, his eyes were pleading with her, “I promise.” Letting go he smiled at her, then turned and started walking, but before he went far he felt a hand grab his jacket, turning around he saw tears in Amori’s eyes, “Your not going after him are you?”
“I have to go, there’s more going on than what you know right now.”
“Will I see you again?” Ryan pulled her in, even if they did see each other again, what would it matter, he would be married or engaged to be. They stood there in silence, Amori’s head rested on his chest.
Ryan didn’t want this to end but he had to go, “I hope so.” Was all he said then he began to slowly back away, vanishing into the trees. Once he was gone Amori turned around and heading back to her car. She had come up here to get some fresh air, clear her mind but now she was more confused than ever.
Ryan walked to the edge of a brook, crossing he went to a place were the foliage was thick, turning he took a long sigh then walked through. He was no longer in Loam; he was now in Goral, his homeland. He looked in the sky he had three minutes before the full dawn. He ran over the fields and valleys, threw the forest and woodlands, till he came to the edge of a village, slowing his pace to a jog, he continued. Being here now was a different experience, the huts, and brick houses, were very different from the huge buildings and gated communities, which you saw when in Loam. He was definitely going to have to readjust to this life. Taking up running again Ryan came to the castle door, looking up he told the guard to open the gate, yelling back the guard said, “Who are you?”
“I am Prince Dryan, I command you to open the gate!”
“Prince, forgive me.” The guard said as he lifted the gate.
Dryan ran threw, getting to the throne room, he stopped, slowing his heart rate; he striated himself, the best he could, before entering. When he opened the doors, everyone in the room turned to look at him; here his blue t-shirt and slacks were way out of place. But it was what he had on; he bowed to his father, and then kissed his mothers hand. Standing on at the side of his mothers’ throne, one hand placed on the crown.
Standing just below was Morgan with his mother and father, then lined up against the wall were women, they had there heads faced down. Dryan was brought to attention upon hearing his mother’s voice, “Well now that Dryan is here we can proceed, I say Morgan may go first.”
Morgadon nod in agreement, with that she clapped her hands, half of the women on the wall walked forward, moving into a straight line.
Morgan could careless for this, but his father had given him no choice. He walked up and down the line; pointing to one of them he asked “What is your name?”
“My name is Vixen, my lord.” Morgan looked at her, why in the world would someone name there child Vixen. He moved to the next, he went down the line till he came to one that he thought appealing, “Tell me what your name is?”
“Lurid is my name, my lord.” Morgan pointed at her, then smiled saying, “She shall be my bride.
Dryan wanted to strangle him; Lurid was a childhood friend, so it was more personal, than just one of the common maidens. Plus Dryan believed that she deserved better than Morgan.
Lurid bowed and stepped forward while the other women went back to the wall. She looked up at Dryan pleadingly, but he diverted his eyes, she knew that he could do nothing, but it was worth a shot. The queen was not pleased with Morgan’s choice either but a deal was a deal. The second set of maidens formed a straight line, as Dryan walked down from his mothers’ side. Growling as he passed Morgan. Dryan walked up and down the line, asking each their name. Seeing them here, he decided it would have been better to let his bride be chosen for him, this was a waste of time. So just pointing to one he said, “You.” She stepped forward while the others went back to the wall. After every thing was settled, when the wedding would be, they left the throne room, while the adults stayed to settle other matters, agreeing that that it would be best if the Princes acquainted themselves with their brides to be.
Lurid and Banal went to change into something they thought more comfortable. While Morgan and Dryan went to the armory, Morgan tried different sword while Dryan changed into something less foreign, “So Dryan, you have a month to get to know you new bride, were will you be taking her?” Morgan said picking up a saber testing it weight.
“What do you care?”
“I might end up tagging along, if it sounds fun.”
“Well I’m probably heading back to Loam.” Dryan stepped out of the room he was changing in. Garbing his blades, he walked out of the armory, Morgan following behind him.
“Loam, why would you be going back there? Wait your going for her.” Dryan said nothing as they walked past servants, and guards, he really was not in the mood for this conversation.
“No, I have unfinished business there.”
“My point exactly, you have to tell her that your about to get married.”
“This has nothing to do with…”
“Just remember you have to take Banal, with you.” Morgan said cutting into Dryan’s sentence.
“Yes, I know, so tell me where were you planning to go?”
“If I knew do you think I would be asking?” Just then Lurid and Banal, walked up behind them, both of them were wearing simple clothing. Dryan looked at Banal, if he did take her to Loam he would either keep her in the house, or he would really have to buy her some new clothes, and change her name to something more common. It’s not like he’d be able to go around telling people her name was Banal.
The four of them walked out of the main gate, not saying a word till they were far from the palace and the villages. Upon entering the forest Lurid asked, “So were we going?”
Dryan replied to her, “Loam, I have some unfinished business there.”
“Wait Loam, isn’t that were the humans live?”
“Yes, is there a problem Banal? If you don’t wish to come you have my permission to stay.”
“No, its just I was surprised that you would even consider going to Loam, don’t they hate are kind?”
“No, actually there I’m more like a celebrity, don’t worry I have plenty of money and space at my place for us to stay there.” He looked at Morgan, “Though you already have a place to stay as well, right, isn’t it a beachfront house?”
“Yes it is and a perfect place to stay round about this time of year, when it’s not winter time.”
Lurid looked at Banal they were both surprised that Morgan and Dryan had a place to live in Loam, the two now wondered how long had they lived there. They were talking like it was a second home. Banal began thinking to herself, if Dryan was a celebrity as he called it, did that mean that he had other women in Loam that wanted him. She was now wondering what he meant when he said he had unfinished business.
By noon they were at the passage to Loam, Morgan passing threw first, then Lurid and Banal, Dryan going last. Dryan took in a deep breath, it was good to back he had also brought his backpack with him, not wanting to leave anything in Goral. Leaving the group he changed into something more suitable, blue jeans, and a red t-shirt. When he came back he saw that Morgan had changed as well. Dryan looked at Banal, “Listen here my name is not Dryan its Ryan, so when other people are around call me Ryan.” Banal looked confused.
“Why would you change your name?”
“Here Dryan is not a normal name, and neither is Banal, so were going to have to figure out a new name for you.” He said as they continued walking. It was night time when they got to the parking lot. Ryan strapped his backpack in, then hopping on his motorcycle he looked at Banal, “Well this is are mode of transportation, are you getting on?” She looked at him, sitting down on what ever it was, and then backed away, “Can’t we just walk?”
Ryan burst into laughter, along with Morgan. When they finally stopped he said, “Listen its best to take the bike, plus the sooner I get home the sooner you get new clothes, so that you won’t look weird, drawing attention from everyone that passes by us.”
Banal looked down at her clothing, then at what Ryan was wearing, sighing she sat on the bike. Within moments they were off, the wind flowing through her hair.
Amori had called Anise, telling her everything that had happened earlier that morning.
“So you’re telling me that you saw Ryan in the forest while you were on your hike?”
“Yes and that other guy, I’m telling you Anise, it was really weird, I mean he was talking like he wasn’t human, he was calling me a human, as if separating himself from the human race, even though he’s was a human himself. The other weird thing that happened was that Ryan seemed to agree with him, even though he seemed to like human more than the other guy, I think he said his name was Morgan.”
“Morgan, did he say his last name?” Amori thought for a bit then said, “No, come to think of it he didn’t Ryan didn’t say a last name.”
“So do you think we should go back to the forest? I mean to see if we can find out more about what’s going on, really its sounds unusual to me.”
“Sorry Anise, I won’t be able to go to the forest again, I promised Ryan that I wouldn’t.”
“You did what.”
“Well I promised, he said it would be better for me not to do anything in that area anymore, and since I promised him I wouldn’t I won’t.” Amori heard Anise sigh on the other end, “Well did you promise that you wouldn’t go to his house?”
“Well I heard that he was out of town, so if we peek around his house we might be able to find something out.”
“But what if he’s home, and he catches us? What would we do then, and plus, neither of us know how to pick a lock.”
“Well one of us does.”
“You know how to pick a lock?”
“No, Lexi does, so all we have to do is get her in on this and we’ll be set to go. Though truthfully it’s not Ryan I’m worried about catching us, it’s the other guy I’m freaking out about.”
“I think it would help to get a guy to come with us just in case.”
“On that one I agree with you girlfriend.”
“Great call Alexis, and I’ll call Cody, you remember him right?”
“Sure I do,” Anise smiled then said, “Wasn’t he the one that you dated during middle school?”
“Yes, and no there is nothing between us anymore, we’ve agreed that were just friends.”
“What ever, so I’ll call Lexi and you call Cody deal?”
“It’s a deal.” Amori hung up the phone, sighing she began tipping in Cody’s number, then stopped thinking to herself, ‘Maybe it would be better if I go over to his house, yea then it would make it harder for him to say no.’
Telling her dad where she was going Amori got the keys then headed to the car. Getting in she cranked it, though her and Cody talked at least twice a week, they hadn’t talked face to face since they where in middle school. When she pulled into his drive way she sighed, “Well it’s now or never.” Going up to the door she rung the doorbell then knocked, she stood there for a little while, before she heard a voice beyond the door, then she heard the door being unlocked. When it opened it took her a while to realize who it was, “Cody? Is that you?”
“Yea, wow Amori your looking good. Um uh, do you want to come inside?”
“Yea, that would be nice.” He held the door open for her; she looked at his star blue eyes. She had forgotten after four years how wonderful they looked. She also noticed that he was rock solid muscles now. Closing the door he followed her to the family room, for him it was different seeing her, it was definitely better than talking to her on the phone, and she had definitely gotten older, not the same kid he use to date, he wouldn’t be surprised if she had a ring on. She was more beautiful now than ever. When they sat they said nothing for a while, till it was broken by Cody, “So um, Amori how have you been, I mean it’s been awhile since we talked, well face to face.” Amori smiled at him, “Yea, it has been quit awhile, though I really need your help with something.
“Sure anything, just say.”
“Well I need your help with, it’s sort of hard to say, I need you more like a body guard. You remember Alexis and Anise right?”
“How could I forget them?”
“Well were going to need your help with sneaking into a certain person’s house, I mean I would totally understand why you wouldn’t want to…”
“I’m in; tell me what time and what house and I’ll be there.” Amori smiled, they both stood up, she hugged him, “Thanks a lot Cody; you don’t know how much this means to me.”
Ryan and Banal pulled into the drive way of his mansion, getting of the bike Banal stared at the strange structure of a place, odd yet magnificent. “So you like it?” Ryan looked at her with a smile, “It looks better on the inside.”
Amori and the others meet about one an a half mile from Ryan’s house. When Alexis saw Amori and Cody getting out of his car she smiled, whispering to Anise, “I’m telling you that the two of them are going to start dating again.” Anise shook her head in agreement, “I think your right, though that really depends on if she likes Ryan.”
“What do you mean?”
“If she didn’t why would she want us to sneak into his house?” Just then Cody and Amori walked up next to them, Amori talking first, “Ok, first I’m going to knock on the door if no one answers then we can continue with the plan, but if someone does then, well have to wait till no ones home.”
Ryan stood in front of the guest room door, banging on it he yelled “How long does it take for you to put on some new clothes?” As he said it, the door opened, Banal stood there she looked sort of different, in a good way in the new clothes, “Well I figured you could come with me to the bank, I need to settle a few things.”
Banal felt weird in these new clothes, but some how more comfortable, “I’ll come, is there anything else were going to do?” Ryan thought for a moment then said, “Don’t know yet, the banks my top priority at the moment.” He headed down the hall then down the flight of stairs, when he got to the bottom he heard the doorbell ring; walking over to it he opened the door expecting it to be one his friends.
Amori turned when she heard the door opening, smiling when she saw it was Ryan, “Hey Ryan.”
“Amori, hi, I wasn’t um, well, expecting to see you here.” He knew he said the wrong thing the moment the words came out.
“Well, after what happened in the forest, then you walking off after the other guy, you really think I wouldn’t want to see if you were still, well, here?” She put her hand on her hip then said, “Glad to see you too.” She turned around and started to walk off, “Amori wait,” He walked out of the house leaving the door open, “Amori, Amori!” She kept walking not even glimpsing behind her, Ryan sped up grabbing her arm he turned her around, “Look Amori, I think it would be really good if we never saw each other again.” Amori looked at him for awhile then said, “Why am I not surprised, you haven’t changed, I can’t even believe I thought to come.” She tried to wrench her arm out of his hand but he held it tighter, “Amori it’s not that I don’t want us to well, be friends, it’s just safer for you if we aren’t.”
“What are you really trying to keep safe Ryan, me or your reputation?” He let go of her arm then, then noticed that she was looking at his front door; he turned to Banal, standing there. When he turned back to Amori he saw something more like anger in her eyes, “Guess it didn’t take you long to find someone else, I think your right it would be best if we never saw each other ever again.” With that she turned and walked off.
Ryan stood there for awhile watching where she had walked off, “Ah, what is wrong with me, who knows what she thinks of me now.” He turned walking to the door and into the house, closing the door behind himself; he saw Banal standing in front of him arms crossed, “So is she the real reason why you came back to Loam?”
“No, she’s just a human, what would make you think something like that?”
“Lets see, she’s beautiful, and the way you were just talking to her, more like you were trying to protect her, then send a worthless human off.” Ryan walked past Banal and headed to the garage but stopped briefly, “Oh, your new name is Anna, get used to saying and getting called it.” With that he walked off to the garage Banal following him in silence.
Once she knew she was out of sight Amori took a detour, meeting up with the other she said, “Ok, Ryan looks like he’s about to leave so if we hear, the sound of either his car or motorcycle, than we know he’s left and we continue with the plan.”
“Um, excuse me but, what exactly are we looking for? I mean we can’t just break into someone’s house, and not even know what your trying to find.” Amori thought about that for bit than agreed that Cody was right, “Ok, I agree with you on that, well, what were trying to do is find out more about Ryan, I mean other than for the past five years, there are no other records on him. I couldn’t even find anything about his parents,” she paused, “Come to think of it I have never seen his parents, I mean even when we were at the party I didn’t see any family photo.”
Anise and Alexis thought about it for a moment, “Your right I don’t remember seeing any family photos either.” Cody looked at the three of them than said, “Wait so you’ve been in his house?”
“Yea, he invited us, it was like a grad party or something, plus only the seniors who had graduated got an invite.”
“Oh, I see. So do you think he’s from another country?”
“Maybe, but I would have been able to get something on him if he was, because he would have either taken a boat or, a plane to get here, or passed through the boarders. But it just doesn’t add up, because I can’t find anything at all on him, except for the past five years.”
Anise put her hand under her chin, something she always did when she was in deep thought; the others were also immersed in their own thoughts. It was strange to think about, for Amori her journalism skills gave her access to information that the others would never have had the chance to find, but all she was able to pull up was things that everyone else already knew, save the fact that it’s like Ryan never existed till the recent five years. Suddenly Cody lifted his head tilting it so that his ear faced the path that lead to the main road, smiling he said, “We should hurry we don’t know what time he could be getting back.” Amori and the others nodded though they didn’t hear any cars or motorcycles pass by.
When they got to his house Alexis went to the front door, “Hmm doesn’t seem like he has alarms in his house, it doesn’t make much sense having no alarms when he has such a big house.” She took out a set of keys; the others watched her, “Um, Alexis how are you going to open the door with the wrong key, each door has its own specific key.”
Alexis smiled then bent down looking through the lock while saying, “Actually this is a specific type of door knob, have the right key for the specific knob and you get in with no problem.” She held out her keys in the sunlight, flipping key by key till she came to the one she wanted, “You see this knob is a Schlage brand, and by the way the key slot looks it seems to need a 98HJ23H model, which it just so happens I have the same key size.” Inserting the key she twisted it in the lock, with a click and a twist of the knob the door open, she motioned for them to stay out side walking in she looked around making sure there were no alarms or cameras, “Ok, come on in, but we really need to hurry we don’t know when he’ll…”
Amori interrupted, “When they’ll.”
“Ok, when they’ll get back. Uh, what do you mean them?”
“Some lady that I saw, standing at the door.”
Anise and Alexis looked at each other then back at Amori, they noticed something they had never seen before in her eyes, but it was only a quick flash then it was gone. Cody was already heading up the stairs, “Instead of standing there you guys should really start looking around.”
They all split up, Amori covering the back, Anise the front, Alexis the middle, and Cody upstairs. Amori decided to start in the indoor pool area; she walked over to the room she had only a few nights ago changed in. She looked around under the bench and inside the lockers, but found nothing, exiting the room she started looking around the pool area.
Cody went room by room, so far he didn’t see anything worth while, till he came to the room at the far end of the hall way, when he went inside, he knew that he had hit the jackpot, if they were going to find anything on this Ryan guy it would be in his room. So far he saw the normal stuff, a work out area at the far end of the room, a bed, and a really large bookshelf that had hundreds of books on it. He decided that they might find something out if they looked through his bookshelf but without the others it would take to long so he sent a text telling them to come and help him. It didn’t take long for them to get to the room.
While the others pulled book after book out, Amori looked around the rest of the room, till she came upon a book that looked different from anything she had ever seen, when she picked it up at set of words appeared, but the writing was in a different dialect. She called the others to her, they all looked at the book, the writing on the front looked like this, ῼ wolf, Cody was the first to speak, “The only letter, or symbol I can tell is the first one,” He pointed to the symbol, “That one stands for Omega.” Amori turned the book around in her hands before saying, “Maybe he has something that translates this writing.”
The others agreed with her, now they really had something to they were looking for.
Neither spoke till, Alexis noticed something, “Hey guys,” They all turned to her, “Have you noticed that all of these books either talk about magic, different realms, vampires, or werewolves?” She read the cover of the book that she held in her hand, “Vampires Blood, I mean I have a cousin who has this book, he said that only six copies were ever made, and the first copy no one knows were it is, he also said that the first copy is the only one based completely off the original draft.” Alexis passed the book to Cody, he opened it then said, “This is definitely the first copy, says so on the second page.” Anise and Amori read over his shoulder.
As they kept looking they noticed that Alexis was right, Amori looked at the time, they had been looking for over half an hour, and they really needed to hurry up. Something caught her attention, reaching up she grabbed the book, she looked at both the back and front, but it was completely blank, no writing, drawing, or anything, when she opened the book, her thoughts blurred, her mind seemed to be just as blank as the book, then it felt like someone or something else was in her mind as well, like it was trying to find something, but just as quickly as it had started it ended. She closed the book placing it back were she had removed it, “Hey, I think we should leave now, we can come back tomorrow.” Amori said then walked out of the room, not waiting for the others to follow, she walked to were the cars were, getting inside she waited for Cody.
Ryan had just finished his bank transaction, when suddenly it felt something or someone else was in his mind; he shook the filling off, looking around, he thought he saw a shadow in the corner, but when he blinked it was gone. Rubbing the back of his neck he walked out of the bank, getting into the car he sighed, “Ok, Anna, do you want to go home or would you like me to show you around, since your going to be living here for a month?”
She looked at him, “When you put it like that, you can show me around.”
Ryan cranked the car, pulling out of the parking lot and turning the corner he headed for the mall, “Well the first place I’ll be taking you to is the mall, it’s were most people hangout.”
While Amori waited in the car, she looked at the object in her hand, it was that book with the symbols on it, she had forgotten she had even picked it up, she got out of the car and headed back to the front door when she heard someone whisper in her ear,
“Keep it my child, and let non take it from you.”
Amori felt herself turn around as if she wasn’t even in
Control of her own body, it felt like she was in a dream,
Walking back to the car she sat down, shutting the door,
She placed the book inside of her sack pack.
When she had snapped out of the trance Amori looked at her sweaty palms, and then at the house, she didn’t ever want to come back, all she wanted to do was go home and take a long shower.
As they drove off Amori heard the voice once more, but it seemed to fade the farther they drove,
“You shall return to me, for you are mine,
And none shall keep you from me.
I have searched for you, and now
I have found you, you are mine.”
The last words faded out of her mind as if they had never been said, all that remained was a light humming sound, but when they got to the highway even that seemed to be all but a dream.
When Ryan had finished showing Anna around, they stopped at a fast food restaurant, and then headed back to his house. After parking in the garage they went inside, they both went upstairs, Ryan to his room and Anna to hers. Ryan threw his backpack next to his nightstand, he sniffed the air, going over to his bookshelf, were the smell was strongest, “Amori,” He picked up a book then smelling it he gave a low growl, “Anise, and Alexis,” Picking up another book he sniffed it for awhile, tilting his head a little, there had been four people in his room but he didn’t know who the fourth was, he took his phone out, dialing a number in he put the phone to his ear, “Hello, David, yea, I need you to do something for me, nah, I just need you to get me a address and phone number. You remember Amori, yea that one, yes, no, just get me the information, thanks bye.” Ryan hung up throwing the phone on his bed, he sighed resting his head in his hands, standing up he went back to the bookshelf, he wondered what had they been looking for, by how strong the their scent was it had only been about two, maybe three hours since they had been there, which meant they had come when he and Anna had left. Suddenly he looked to a corner in the room, something was missing, he went over to the desk, opening drawer after drawer, he finally came to the last one hoping what he thought was not what had happened, he opened the drawer, when he saw nothing in it he slammed it shut, his eyes became slits, his teeth fangs, he turned when he heard his phone ring, calming himself, he answered, it was David, “David, yea, you got it, hold on let me get something to write with,” Getting something to write with he sat at the desk, “You still there, ok, phone number first, ok, alright now the address, ok thanks man, alright bye.” Ryan took in a deep breath then typed in the number.
Amori sat one her bed, she held the book in her hand, something about it seemed to call to her, when her phone started ringing she jumped, shoving the book under her bed, she looked at the number it wasn’t familiar, she opened the phone, “Hello, this is Amori speaking.”
Ryan stood up when he heard her voice, “Amori is that you?”
“Yes who is this?” She was about to hang up the phone when the person on the other end said, “It’s me, Ryan, I know you were here.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Don’t play games with me Amori!” His voice became more of a growl, “You have the book I want it back.”
Her heart began to pound; at the same time she heard the voice whisper in her ear,
“Tell him nothing, you don’t have the book,
And you don’t know what he’s talking about!”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about Ryan.”
“Amori, your lying, where is it, do you have it with you?!” His tolerance was running out.
Amori was silent she heard him yelling through the phone in one ear, and the voice silent but firm in the other ear,
“Tell him nothing, he must not have the book,
Tell him nothing.”
“I don’t have the book! I don’t know what you’re talking about!” With that she hung up the phone, she threw the phone, then sank to the floor, this was beginning to become more than she had wanted.
Ryan stood there with the phone in his had, he decided that it would be best if he didn’t make a house call, till tomorrow. It might not end to pleasant, but he didn’t know if he could keep away that long, he paced his room, finally he sighed, then decided to watch TV he left his room closing the door behind himself. First thing tomorrow he would get the book back from her, he had to.
The following day Ryan woke up early, he left through his window, the sun was barely up.
Amori dreamed, she saw a figure walk towards her, something about it demanded respect, its voice was some how calming and worthy of trust, the closer it got she could tell that it was a man but more wonderful than man, something more of myth than reality, he stood in front of her stroking her hair with his golden hand, “You know not how long I have waited for you, my child,” He took in a long breath, “I have a task for you, and you alone, something that you mustn’t tell even to your closest of friends.” He looked at her cupping her face in his hands, his eyes were like twin embers aglow with the fire of life, but yet something deeper that one could not discern so easily.
“I promise.” She heard herself say.
“I knew I could trust you, I’ll meet you in the forest, tonight, at eight.” He looked up his smile fell from his face, “Leave us, you don’t belong here.” He looked back at her, the smile back on his face, “I shall wait for you.” As he walked away the dream faded.
Getting up Amori went to the bathroom, rinsing her face she looked at her self in the mirror, when she came back she saw Ryan standing inside of her room, before she screamed he moved across the room, covering her mouth and pushing her against the wall, when their eyes met she noticed something different about his, they were slits, and when he spoke she saw his fangs, “Don’t scream, I’m just here for the book, if I let you go will you scream?” Not able to speak because of his hand covering her mouth, she shook her head no, he released her.
“What are you doing in my house?”
“What were you doing in mine?” Turning around he took in his surroundings. He noticed the picture by her bed was of her and some other guy.
“I’m only here for the book, unless you want to also explain why you were going through my house.” He turned back to her, she just stared at him not speaking, or even moving.
“Where is it, once I have the book I’ll be out of you’re life forever.” Still she said nothing, he went to her whispering in her ear, “Amori tell me where it is, for the both of are sakes, it would be better if you gave it back to me.” She looked at him, “What are you really?”
Ryan looked away; it was like she didn’t hear a word he had said.
“Amori that’s not what’s important right now, tell me where the book is, I’m trying to do this the easier way.”
Amori heard the voice,
“Ask him ask him what he truly is.”
“I want the truth, I know your not human, so what are you?” He looked at her hard.
“If I tell you will you tell me what I want to know?”
“I will never let him have it, say yes,
Ask him ask him what he truly is,
Then who the girl is as well,
See if he’ll tell you.”
“If you answer two questions of mine then I’ll tell you.”
“What are they?”
“First what are you really, and then who is she?”
Ryan sighed, calming himself, “I’m well what you would call a, well shape shifter.”
