The doors opened to a world of glass cases and velvet trays. Coins. Real coins. Not the kind you spent on bubblegum or comic books, but the kind that whispered of history and scarcity. His father led him to a counter where a man with a monocle; Billy swore it was a monocle, produced a small envelope with reverence.

Inside was the elusive 1955-S Lincoln penny.

It gleamed like a secret. Not rare in the way diamonds are rare, but rare in the way childhood moments are; precious because they’re fleeting. His father paid in cash, folded the receipt like origami, and handed Billy the coin as if passing down a legacy.

“You keep this,” he said. “It’s not just a penny. It’s a promise.”

Billy never forgot that. Not the elevator ride, not the smell of roasted chestnuts from the street vendor below, not the way his father’s coat smelled faintly of pipe tobacco and peppermint.

Back in his armchair, Billy stirred. The fire had gone out, and the room was dim. He reached into the drawer beside him and pulled out a small velvet pouch. Inside, the 1955-S Lincoln penny still waited, untouched by time, its copper face worn smooth by decades of reverence.
