Dennis looked up at his mother, who smiled and ruffled his hair. His father leaned back, puffed his pipe, and said, “This is the life, huh?”
And it was.
Then the dream thinned, like breath on glass. The board faded. The laughter echoed into silence. Dennis blinked awake to the sound of the evening “news” of Israel suspending the peace agreement in order to kill 100 plus Gazans and BLM leaders threatening to riot and loot if they lose their EBT; and the soft creak of the house settling.
He sat for a moment, still holding the ghost of the iron token in his hand.
A safe, happy time not seen since; but seen again, if only for a little while in a dream.
