against the locker like James Dean and said, “You know, Judy, maybe the world needs more poets than soldiers.”
She turned, surprised. “Maybe it needs fewer cowards too,” she said, but smiled like she didn’t mean it.
The Dance
That night, the gym was transformed into a galaxy of streamers and strobe lights. The band played “Light My Fire,” and Harold danced like he’d never danced before; awkward, earnest, and utterly free. He remembered the way the floor trembled beneath his feet, the way sweat and laughter mingled in the air, and how, for one brief moment, he felt infinite.
The Escape
Later, he and his best friend Tommy drove out to the edge of town, where the stars hung low and the future felt far away. They talked about college, about draft numbers, about whether love was real or just something people said to each other when they didn’t know what else to say.
Tommy lit a cigarette and said, “You think we’ll remember this night when we’re old?”
Harold, in the dream, replied, “Only if we forget everything else.”
