Downtown

You probably take little meaning from this word unless you are quite old. Sure, it’s that abandoned part of town where the businesses requiring a low rent to make a go of it are.

No, downtown is gone. Hell, even the malls which replaced it are on their last legs, being converted to government office spaces and apartments for the low, section 8 rent set.

Gone.

Gome is the downtown block you could walk to which hosted three five and tens; Woolworth’s one of them with its wonderful lunch counter. We all know what happened there, precipitating the decline which has resulted in the closing of the physical stores, while becoming a British on-line company.

Gone.

Santa was in the basement not far from the toy section, and Mom would take you by the hand or wheel you in a carriage to see him, and while you sat in his lap you told him all the things you wanted for Christmas.
