Later, he’s in his backyard, lying on a scratchy wool blanket, watching Sputnik blink across the stars. His father’s voice echoes from the porch, talking about Eisenhower and the Yankees. His mother hums while shelling peas. Fireflies rise like tiny lanterns, and the world feels stitched together by porchlight and possibility.
He wakes up in his recliner, the TV murmuring something about something they call Medicare. But for a moment, he swears he can taste the root beer, feel the wind in his hair, and hear Jimmy laughing behind the counter.
