Written by Janette Sebring Lowrey and illustrated by Gustaf Tenggren, this 1942 Little Golden Book follows five mischievous puppies who dig under the fence to explore the world beyond their yard. Among them is the titular Poky Little Puppy, who lags behind, distracted by sights and smells, missing both the trouble and the reprimands that await his siblings.
Exploration Begins
The five puppies dig a hole under the fence and wander off into the wide, wide world. The Poky Little Puppy, always behind, misses the group's adventures and the scolding they receive when they return home.
Each time the puppies misbehave, their mother denies them dessert; first rice pudding, then chocolate custard, and finally strawberry shortcake. But the Poky Little Puppy, arriving late and unnoticed, sneaks in and eats the treats alone.
This pattern repeats. The puppies dig, explore, get punished, and the Poky Little Puppy feasts. But eventually, his luck runs out. When he finally returns home late one last time, the dessert is gone, and he learns that pokiness can mean missing out.
