Chapter 66
The job was complete. The President, Vice President, as well as the entire cabinet, were dead, and the covert group had done a tremendous service to their country—possibly the world. Now, according to their training, they would each execute their exit plan, and after the White House had been evacuated, they returned to their homes. Upon entering, each found an envelope slipped under their door. Inside was a slip of paper and a key. Their training spelled out the final steps of their mission, instructing them to go to their respective banks. There they opened a safe deposit box whose number matched the number on the slip of paper. Opening it with the key that had been delivered to them, they retrieved a large envelope with a set of instructions and new identification papers—birth certificates, ID cards, and the like. The instructions were tailored for the individual and highly complex in order to evade apprehension by authorities. Some went to Europe, while others were sent to the Barbados' or the deep woods of Maine. None would have contact with the others but receive a monthly stipend as living expenses delivered into a secret bank account. Apartments, houses, and cabins had been readied well ahead of time for their new occupants.

Meanwhile, at the White House, the tragic scene had been cleaned and sanitized while flags flew at half-staff. The president’s body was displayed in the rotunda while the vice president was displayed a few days later. With the Blackfire team having disappeared, the following Monday raised suspicions as to exactly what had happened. But with the absence of any clues, both the FBI as well as the CIA were at a loss as to point the finger at the responsible party. But it was suspected that the assassination had been carried out by a highly trained, well-organized group now branded as terrorists. Now, according to the constitution, the speaker of the house was quickly sworn in as president, and Congress would busy themselves in choosing another vice president. Cabinet members would be chosen later.
Most Americans, having witnessed the destruction of a fascist regime, celebrated the sudden passing of a corrupt government bent on robbing them blind while they acquired the wealth once held by them. Others, recognizing the government’s views as their own, mourned deeply, with many collapsing in the streets, unable to recover for days. But one thing was abundantly clear. When the following Monday arrived, the members of the Blackfire team would not be returning to work.
