Chapter 35

Graduate school proved to be more than difficult, but in Frank’s mind, if what you want to do isn’t difficult, it’s not worth doing. With the papers he would write and his eventual dissertation, he felt he was definitely up for the challenge. Betsy, however, seemed to be in a different situation. She enjoyed studying journalism, but there was something about her that seemed sullen. She wanted to get into law school so badly, and as she began classes, her mood took on a tone that he took to be disappointment. She tried to establish a sense of passion for what she was preparing herself for, but something was missing. Even in bed, she seemed to be lacking the uncontrolled zeal Frank had become accustomed to—the energy that nearly drove her off the edge of sanity. In spite of the physical nature of their relationship, his expressed his concern for the change he saw, but was met with an emotional wall. She simply didn’t want to talk about it. He didn’t know her very well, but he knew when not to push. If Betsy wanted to talk, he would be there to listen and perhaps offer a shoulder to cry on. But for now, it seemed to be enough just for him to be there—a warm body to play with and, at times, lie next to for the sole purpose of acquiring some necessary comforting. Beneath the sexual dynamo, Betsy presented herself as there was a young woman who, feeling the pain of discontent, begrudged herself for not trying harder. But her future would someday take a turn for the unbelievable. All she had to do was work, and her destiny would be sealed.
