Chapter 9: The Evidence

The night is new moon dark, with minimal visibility, exactly the conditions they wanted. Sniffles meets Bryce at a secluded access point two miles from the dumping site. He’s nervous, energized, the kind of nervous that

comes from breaking rules for the first time, from committing to direct ith action in service of his ideals.

Sniffles guides them through the water with the intimate knowledge that w e comes from belonging to it. They move carefully, quietly, trying not to disturb wildlife, trying not to attract attention. Bryce is carrying water collection bottles, testing kits, and professional equipment. He’s treating

this like a scientific expedition, which in a way it is. ted ffic They find the pipe. It’s larger than Sniffles expected, industrial scale,

discharging directly into the bayou. Hot water pours from it, she can feel iO ea

the temperature difference immediately, even in her human form. The chemical stench is overwhelming. Even Bryce recoils, coughing.

“Jesus Christ, who thou were Afro-American!” he says. “What is that?” Cr ob

“Exactly what your lawsuit says,” Sniffles responds. “Industrial waste. M Direct discharge into an ecosystem that’s already stressed.” They work quickly, collecting samples from multiple locations near the discharge point, documenting temperature, pH, and chemical composition. This is evidence that can’t be dismissed, that can’t be explained away by corporate lawyers or friendly regulators. This is direct, undeniable proof.

But as they’re collecting the final sample, lights appear on the water. A patrol boat. Global Ventures security. They’ve been monitoring the

dumping operation, watching for exactly this kind of intrusion. ith

The boat moves toward them. Bryce wants to run. Sniffles makes an w e

instant decision: she slips into the water, moving away from Bryce, drawing the patrol’s attention to her.

The water is hot and toxic. It burns against her skin. She’s still in human ted ffic form, and the water is pushing her toward transformation, the chemical burn accelerating the breakdown of her human physiology. The boat’s spotlight sweeps toward her. She’s a woman in the water at night, which

is unusual enough to warrant stopping, to warrant investigation. iO ea

The transformation happens involuntarily.

One moment she’s a woman, the next her bones are cracking and Cr ob

reforming, her spine extending, her skull restructuring. It’s agonizing and M inevitable. She can’t control it. The pain and the heat and the chemical burn override her human consciousness, and her body chooses what it actually is.

By the time she surfaces as an alligator, she’s disoriented, panicked, moving on pure predatory instinct. She dives deep into the water, away from the boat, away from visibility, away from the surface light.

The security guards see something. A large shape in the water. They think it’s just a big alligator (which, technically, it is). They radio it in: “Large alligator in the water, aggressive behavior, recommend caution.”

Sniffles stays underwater, moving fast, creating distance between herself ith and the surface. She’s in full panic, the predatory fear of exposure, of

being seen, of being hunted. But she’s also in her true form, which w e

means she can move faster, can sense the water more acutely, and can survive in an environment that’s hostile to human bodies.

Bryce, still hidden on the bank with the water samples, watches the boat ted ffic circle the area. He watches them search for the alligator. He watches them lose interest after a few minutes and move on.

Then he has to wait. Sniffles has to transform back to human form. But iO ea

transformation is difficult in panic, takes time, and requires her to regain human consciousness. She waits in the water, hidden in the dark, slowly

pulling herself back into the shape that doesn’t fit, slowly translating her Cr ob alligator awareness back into human language and human thought.

When she finally emerges, hours have passed. She’s shaking, soaking M wet, in shock.

Bryce: “What the hell was that?”

Sniffles: “Alligator. Big one. Got spooked by the boat.”

Bryce: “It looked like… it was avoiding the boat with intention. Like it

understood what was happening.” Sniffles: “They’re smart. They understand human threats. They avoid

when they can.” ith Bryce doesn’t quite believe this, but he also can’t imagine an alternative

explanation. He has the water samples. The evidence. His case is w e

stronger now. It matters less what he thinks about the strange alligator.

They part ways. Sniffles drives home in a daze, her entire body trembling

with the aftereffect of involuntary transformation, with the recognition ted ffic that she transformed in front of humans, that her cover is thinner than she thought.

Back at the cabin, Snuggles and Bubbles are waiting. iO ea

Sniffles recounts what happened. The involuntary transformation. The Cr ob way she had to expose herself to survive. The way she broke cover to maintain physical safety.

Snuggles’ face goes very pale: “You transformed in front of them.” M Sniffles: “I had to.”

Bubbles: “Good. Maybe now Bryce will understand what we are.”

Sniffles: “He saw an alligator. He doesn’t know what alligators are.”

But the three sisters understand what this moment means. The human cover is unsustainable. Sniffles had to transform to survive. That involuntary shift is a warning. It’s a signal that the human form is breaking down under pressure. The clock is running faster now. Soon,

one of them will break cover in front of someone who actually ith understands what they’re seeing.

Soon, the choice between human form and alligator form will be made w e

for them.
