A demonstrator holds up a banner during a protest against

gentrification in Mexico City on July 4, 2025.

Mexicans are taking to the streets of Mexico City to protest a wave of American “digital nomads” and tourists they say are driving up rents and displacing locals from their neighborhoods.

What began as a largely peaceful Friday march through the Condesa and Roma districts turned violent when some locals began smashing storefront windows, looting shops and harassing foreigners. Graffiti on the shattered glass read “get out of Mexico,” while protesters carried signs saying “gringos, stop stealing our home” and demanding tougher housing laws.

Some protesters framed the fight in explicitly anti-colonial terms.
